Which item to get first?

question to ask yourself is .... what do you want to shoot?

its not gadget collecting hobby, you dun have to buy all the lens to cover you from 0mm to 600mm.

unless you are so cash rich and wanna collect everything, buy what you will use.

if the lens already cover what you shoot, what is lacking? flash? tripod? or if you want better IQ, ISOand control, den better body?

i think very hard for people who recently picked up phtogrphy to say which genre they want to go into...

but, that means that you need to take ur time to explore... don't jump into the river without knowing how far you are planning to swim...

Hi, currently I'm holding on to Canon 550D, a EF 16-35mm f2.8L USM and a EF 50mm f1.4 USM. Thought of getting a flash next (580EX II).

Due to budget constrain can only get 1 of the following, a EF 28-300mm f3.5-5.6L IS USM or changing to a 5D. Which one should i get first? Lens or body?

Get the 5DmkII and since you already have the 16-35mm, just buy the 70-200mm 2.8

so many people out there buying DSLR just bcos its relatively cheaper now then last time, and they just want to have better photos...

so they never even thought about all those what they wanna shoot, why they buy for....

since u want to take photos of your kids, 7D with more AF points will be more a more suitable choice then 5DMKII cos focusing is slower then 7D.

I dun see a need for you to use 28-300mm to shoot landscape or your kids. So you can skip this option.

A 550D can definitely take landscape and portait shots of your kids so another body is not really required. Your 16-35 is good for landscape and your 50mm is good for portrait.

if you just want to spend money then get an 85 1.2 II or 5d2, whatever you fancy.

Can shoot XMM or not? :bsmilie: haha. Anyway to TS, if you do not have a answer to the questions posted here, I suggest you do some research, shoot more and find out what you really need, lenses are not cheap, make a wise decision. And I agree the 7D is a better choice for action photography, as in the AF is faster.

Went to Funan today, so piss off, check the price of the EF 70-200mm L2.8 IS II USM lens at Challenger Mini at level 2 and the lady say cash $2980 w/gst. Told her I go walk walk first, when I went back a guy serve me and i told him about the price and he say impossible. I pointed to the lady who quote me the price (and she was looking at us) and he insist that its not possible, its $33XX.

Told him forget it and I walk away. Regret that should get it initially when she quoted that price... sigh...

I don't think many people buy lenses from Challenger. Go to a regular camera shop and the price will be consistent.

for cheap 580 EXII, if the canon purchase with purchase offer is still on, buy 50D or 7D can get at $599. That is the cheapest so go check canon website if the offer still on, else go HK and buy, i got mine from there for $550+ with international warranty.
