I was thinking of the D3x after trying out at the cs kopi session. But looking as the 5 digit price, I think can forget about it unless I am doing this as an occupation or strike toto.

Couldn't agree better, if its nt ur profession, its really hard to justify on the huge expenditure, i rather splurge on lens, from a leisure shooter standpoint

Besides birds and animals, I can use it to shoot human beings uptight, sporting action and abstract composition. Those wider angle lenses like 24-70 are not that useful to me. This is why I opt for Nikkor 200-400f4 VR - my dream uptight lens for now.

Not in the position to comment, since i haven try the 80-400 yet, but did laid my hands on the 200-400 once on my D700, i mus say the IQ,AF speed and accuracy simply "WOW" me
Is most's fav at the moment but can easily becomes a white elephant also
P.s. i been neglecting it ever since i got my UWA/Portrait/Micro lens :sweatsm:
o.. forgot to add, it depends.. if im shooting event then it will have to be e 24-70(if i can ever afford it). but for now, all my af/zoom lenses sit in my dry cab when im shooting my own stuff. just dun like zooms n af.
my typical walk around kit for film is tokina 20-35 2.8, nikkor 50 1.2 AIs, and either vivitar 105 2.5 macro or 135mm f/2.0 ais.
for my d200, the 50 is swapped out for 35mm f2 pre ai. the 50mm eqv. focal lenght is really important to me. fits just nice. =)
havent tried the 2 other 50s you ve mentioned, but its worlds apart from the 50 1.4 ais/af-d (haven tried AF-s). dof, contrast, colour rendition, bokeh.. really special lens =)
