Which is the better lens to get for potrait lens?

Thanks torak for all your info.

But seems like 50mm & 35mm is popular in this market.. But can I say if I would like to take wider, I hv to choose 35mm! But 50mm is sharper? Correct me if I'm wrong..

I don't think I will choose macro lens. As I would like experience on portraits first.. To experience, and step by step..

I never tried the 35mm before, but for the 50mm its very sharp.

However, dont be over concerned with sharpness. The reviews for the 35mm is pretty good as well, so dont let this be ur primary concern.

If u r taking a single person portraiture shot, then i think the 50mm is good enough even when used indoors. For outdoors, its not an issue at all, since u got so much more space to move about.

Personally, both focal lengths are fine for portraiture, u wont go wrong with either of these 2 lenses. But I recommend the 50mm due to the fact that its very cheap (less than $200), and as a beginner its best not to waste too much money 1st IMO.

What u say is correct, for me a beginner if to buy an expensive lens without knowing how to function or control the modes, etc... Really a waste if $$$$, well guess 50f1.8 is the best lens for me at this stage... =)

with a $800 budget, I will actually recommend the Minolta 100mm f2.8 macro lens instead, since TS wants to do both portraiture and macro. So just nice the macro lens will satisfy both needs.

Agree.

Mainly for outdoor..

Actually your 16-105 is good enough at 105 end. But cannot blur out the background that much. Try it out first before you buy anything.
85mm f/2.8 is a good option as you have plenty of room to work for outdoors
Tamron 90mm f/2.8 is a best choice for price, macro and outdoor portraits

I have 35F1.8 and 50 F1.8. Both are equally sharp. I have 30F2.8 Macro also. Also very sharp. U can consider getting the 30F2.8 Macro and put extension tube for macro. With $800, you can buy all three like me if you get 2nd hand.

not sure the price range in sg these days. Would it be worth considering buying lenses from either Hong Kong or North America? I find lenses over there are heaps cheaper than it is in oz..
somes lenses are half the price and help stretch your dollar further.

its almost a MUST to buy a lens from HK when visiting :bsmilie::bsmilie:

35mm f1.8 is only about S$250 there. the price different for Zeiss lenses is even more

I have the 35F1.8 and I must say it is my favourite lens.

You can actually get quite good close ups with it though its not 1:1 magnification.

Turn your 16-105 to 35 and try and shoot a few days at that aperture and you'll probably see why its a comfortable focal length.
Its nice and sharp too.

Thanks for your recommend... I bought 50f1.8 already. Due to I a beginner trying out first.

Yup if I gg HK I definitely wanna buy lens from there. I been there 3 times but I not into dslr yet. Sad..

35mm on an APS-C is a good focal length.
However, it also depends on your style of shooting. Some like to shoot wide while some like to shoot tele.

Chrissie,

There's ebay sellers from HK that you can purchase the lens. If you don't feel safe, you can try google B&H Photo. It's North American site...worth comparing prices. Hope that helps:)

Don't forget to add shipping prices and possible GST.

Actually for your budget can easily get a Sigma 50mm F1.4 which is an amazing piece of glass for general use & portraits.
