Hi,

I dont know whether I post in the correct section but need help on getting the best compact camera to take Night Photography. I bought Panasonic Lumix FX03 but it sucks when taking Night Photography. I know it will not be as good as Digital SLR Camera but the standard has to be as close as possible mah. Hence I need expert recommendation, thanks a lot.

Darren

HI, can share why does it sucks? did you use a tripod?

Night photography needs tripod and a compact that can do long exposures and if possible can adjust f.stops.

I think most compact cameras which can do long exposure can take good night photography. Yes, in additional, you need a tripod to assist you with the help of timer mode or shutter release cable to trigger the shutter.

what is long exposure meant? what is it all about? Should i make it to the highest? me newbie in camera. It looks very weird to bring a tripod when my camera is juz a compact camera lehz...so far all the tripod i saw are those big ones for digital SLR type...

why sucks?
-sharpness is not there...kind of blur even though i switch to night scenery mode
-there is always red eye...cannot remove it lehz...anyone know how? if yes, can teach me?
-color not bright...i guess its something to do with long exposure...maybe i will try it again...

Fujiflim F30 is quite good for night shots....:)

Was there any question, when he said

COMPACT

NIGHT

in one breath? =D

Hehe, but what exactly are you taking photos of, at night? If it's not involving a lot of people, a lot of Canon Powershots with manual modes will do you fine too.

That reminds me of something I always forget to asl: Are there compacts (not prosumer) that allows you to keep the shutter open for long times (over 30 seconds at least). My Sony P200 is great but max shutter speed is 30sec no Bulb mode of course, just wonder if there are any that have bulb.

I used Fujifilm F30. The max exposure time is 15 Sec using Night Scene mode. Using Aperture priority will be max 3 Sec. Exposure compensation from -2 EV to +2 EV. at a step of 1/3 EV.

CS old birds using this Fuji F30  good recommendations

IN Manual mode what is the longest shutter speed? in my Sony it is 30sec many Sony's allow 30sec, one needs that at least, IMO.

Taking nice photos need techniques and not good gear. If you want sharp and good quality night photography, you definitely need to use a tripod.

2 important camera features needed:
1. Long exposure
Camera is capable to take slow shutter speed. Check out the camera specification, it will indicate the slowest shutter speed e.g. 15sec. If it has speed like 4sec or slower, it should able to take nice night photos.

2. Timer mode (2sec/10sec) / release or remote cable
When shutter speed is slow, even with tripod will cause unnecessary vibration when trigger the shutter while taking photo. To prevent these problems, use timer mode like 2sec or release cable.
