John 3:16 is your ONLY choice. The others aren't even worth mentioning.

John 3:16 is always busy. Look for Samuel, the owner's son. He'll offer good advice and demonstrate taking a picture of you to showcase the cameras.

Alternatively, as "Photobum" said, if you don't mind walking, look for Louise at Edison Electronics (Level 1, Sim Lim Square).

I never get cheated or chop in Edison before and that is where i usually shop. too bad they dun carry much product olympus product, I usually shop accessories from them.
look for Kenny.

The most honest shop in funan would have to be John 3:16
ALthough i do all my shopping at Cathay. Easily the most reliable. Has the largest stock in Singapore and can always find what your looking for. Except think tank, which i go to TK for!

There are only 2 places that I would recommend.

1. John 3:16
2. Harvey Norman Funan

Whatever the case, u still need to do your homework just to be safe. But the service is really good at John 3:16. Harvey Norman Funan, u can get good service from Amos.

All the other places, you go with your sword drawn and your shields up!! :bsmilie:

You must be joking with some of the stores.

I feel that experience with each camera store varies individually. I have no problem shopping with either Alan Photo or Max Photo. I do my homework beforehand. Know what I need. Pop into the store, buy it and leave. I don't sit around and talk-**** with the sale persons.

About the 'botok' at Alan Photo in Funan, I did not have any issues with him either. I have bought a few small and inexpensive items from him in the past. He seemed helpful each time I was there and I am satisfied with my purchases.

To add to my comment, I did have problems with stores like Song Brothers. Some of their sales persons are arrogant and pretentious.

Erm... i will try not to go to MAX PHOTO in funan. my experiences there were pretty bad went to get PNS and filter, maybe i am a kid but yea they see me go in, no one will come and offer service once a tourist comes in *hospitality mask comes on* my gosh and in funan there is another shop on the 2nd floor, try not to go there also. I went there asking for my friend a 67mm UV filter, got quoted $60, then i told him i was searching something of 15-25 he told me "ok, you slowly go find ok?" wa.... no wonder some people nicknamed it "The Ah-Beng Shop" new shop on CS :) (TABS) hahahahaha

Which is an honest, reliable shop in Funan/Peninsula?

i'd suggest John 3:16 only as they actually fulfill both criteria

honest
- price below RRP.
- price quoted always with GST added. no such thing as adding the GST after bargaining.
- if the price has dropped since the last time it was quoted, u'll enjoy that further discount too.

reliable
- same price for everyone. regardless of race, language or religion.
- u can always go back if u run into a problem with your purchase. never 'not our problem'.
- sam/ leslie remembers almost every (if not every) face who've bought from them. they are reliable friends and know what u may need next on your journey in photography.

visit them and u'll understand the experiences described by some of the previous posters. (including the waiting bit. sam's never in a hurry to take your money - which can only be a good thing)

You guys are crazy, Cathay photo is the worse store in Singapore...

They quote anyhow they want.. I can get anything much cheaper anywhere else.

All that sounded quite remarkable. I'm not sure if I've ever encountered that kind of people buying other things. Will definitely want to check them out soon. Went today but they were closed.

John 3:16..... erm, they go church on Sundays..... that's why closed.... CK Tangs used to be closed on Sundays for the same reason too... haha... ;)

In that area, I'd also go to John 3:16 only and exclusively. I would give Cathay a miss for reasons too many to list. Same goes for Max Photo and Alan Photo, they give retailers a bad name. You can do all the "homework" you want, that will not prevent you from getting bad service from them anyway.

Further away, I agree with those who have recommended Lord's, TK, and Orient Photo. I have bought repeatedly from all of them, and Raymond (Lord's), Richard (TK) and Stanley (Orient) have given me outstanding service too.

I am 1.86m tall and weights 130kg, I think that's why I got good services from both Max and Alan.

You'll have to look tougher than the sales persons there to receive good service. ;)

Dropped by yesterday. Amos no longer works there... Quite sad... Wonder if he went to a different branch or if he left HN for good...?

My Suggestion...

1. Go to Harvey Norman or Courts... there are a lot of selection there.
2. if you don't feel like buying, note the model and the price.
3. CALL in advance (especially Alan and Cathay Photo), ask the salesperson's name (whom give you the price).
4. Decide, and then go to the shop, look for the salesperson, and tell him that you've called before.

If you're too lazy to do those things, just go to John 3:16... their price won't be the lowest (maybe $10 more from the cheapest price in other shops) but you won't be cheated... guarantee!

My two cents.

Sorry, I quoted wrongly in my previous post ^^^ :sweatsm:

Mod: why can't I deit my post? Thx.

In Order:
Actually I only go to these three shops so can't mention about the rest.

1) John 3:16
2) T.K. Foto
3) Lords

John 3:16

By terms of doing homework means reading up the DSLR u r getting. For me, I got confused and blanked out at some point. I didnt realise that I'm asking some stupid and dumb questions.. But Samuel and his gang were patient and offered good advices.. although what Samuel offers me is damn tempting and blows my budget waay out of hand, but at least he didnt persuade me to get it.

I think most shops are pissed at the recent hype where most youngsters are into photography that they started visiting those well known shops listed here, and asking those weird and dumb questions. Some amateur photographers expected good quality stuffs and expected them to be cheap. This makes me think whether are we the cause of the poor customer service?? I have a friend who said that the reason why some sellers showed attitude towards u is bec. they dunno the product well.

Well, maybe photobum has a point where he looks intimidating so that shop owners wont cheat him. Bring a friend who knows the market with u.. Its kinda true dat sometimes appearances deceive ppl. I kinda look like the person who will walk into the shop and try everything but will not buy anything. I once walked into a v.v. well known shop listed here and tried a boatload of stuff.. The guy appeared bored, distracted but remained polite. When I mentioned that I will take all the stuff, his face suddenly lighted up and out of nowhere, the good-customer-face surfaced.

did you go on a sunday?

they are closed on sundays :D

i think opening times are 1230pm - 9pm, mon to sat.

I AGREE :thumbsup::thumbsup:. After hanging around at Orient Photo for almost 3 hours yesterday, I guess I had encountered at least 4 of such juvenile customers who asked such questions.

Is it because I look 'intimidating' to them? Actually, I don't think so. Here is my strategy. Whenever I pop into one of these shop, the first question I will ask is the boss (I know their bosses by name) there. When they say "Mr XXX is not around. How may I help you?" I will start giving them my shopping list.

At the end of the deal, I will say to them "Mr XXX will usually give me a good price." So magically, I got the good prices and the good customer service I wanted. ;)
