Dear all,

I had heard that John 3:16 has good service but I'm wondering if there are other similar shops in Funan/Peninsula area with reasonable pricing and honest dealings? I'm looking for a simple sub $200 compact digital camera. The pricing does not have to be the cheapest among the shops as being the cheapest doesn't guarantee good, reliable service. Thanks in advance.

For better stores near Peninsula/Funan, try:

  • Cathay Photo (your most obvious choice of course)
  • Alan Photo
  • The Camera Workshop
  • Max Photo
If you are willing to walk a bit, you should try:

  • TK Foto (Shaw Centre)
  • Orient Photo (Sim Lim Square)
  • Alan Photo (Sim Lim Square)
If you live near AMK, you should go to MS Color. Look for Florence.;)

'Alan Photo' in Sim Lim Sq i am not sure... you lucky you get a good salesman, if unlucky, you also ga na chop carrot. 'Max Photo' i dun think so.

You must be joking with some of the stores.

For that Peninsular/Funan area, you are better off in this order

1. John 316
2. Cathay Photo
3. Alan Photo
4. Max Photo

For 2 and 3, you have to try your luck. If you got a good salesman, you are lucky. If not.......good luck.

I rather go further away to TK Foto and Lords for my shopping.

John 3:16 provides pretty good service too. it is at funan... i got a dry cabinet from them. price is reasonable.

Since you are looking at simple sub-$200 PnS digicam.... just go to Challenger, Harvey Norman will do.

IMO all salesman are not really honest... they are employed to squeeze your hard earned moolah!... That's economics!

Even petrol stations are now selling decent Sanyo digicam for $99/-

My advice.... do you own homework. And then pick the one with a good price and good service to you.

out of the shop mentioned above, i still think john has better price and good service. cathay photo their service is good but might not have better price than John. The others shop some might offer grey sets. if u are ok with grey sets then go ahead. if not, I will recommend you check out Cathay Photo check out the prices then John. After which decide from there.

Thanks everyone for your input, but I am wondering, TMC, where is this "Lords" you are referring to?

For Alan Photo in Funan, avoid the botak man...confirm bad service one :bsmilie:

Hi, TMC, I already got the address for Lord's Camera.

Lord's is located at Lucky Plaza. It is the only camera shop there worth visiting. Good service, and reasonable pricing.

John 3:16, cathay, MS color, TK photo, lords, OP, no preference in particular order... Alan Photo(SL or Funan) depend on luck... the first time i walk in, ask for a quote already give a chop head price... i ask nicely best price if pay cash?? he reply with ah beng accent...

the sales guy was lucky my wife was around, else  ....

its also my last time ever going to them...

Agree...
Everything he says is no,not sure and dunno. If got stock,he wont reply. He will just go get what you want and not say anything.

The discuss here seems to be toward "which shops provide best service and price".

If we are talking about Honest, Reliable shops in Funan, then I will include HN and Courts, in the definition of honest, as long as they are not ripping you off, selling at manufacturer's recommended retail price (RRP) is considered honest!

If you are around SLS, please take a look at the "Start Rating" criterias: it states "never sell higher than RRP"

How can shops survive for making only $30 for selling $1600-$1700 camera? They are selling to locals with cash terms at such prices for few reasons:

1. To have cash turn around
2. To get volume, so they might get better discounts from the manufacturer.
3. But they will be selling to foreigners at "Honest Price", most of the times slightly better than RRP, I don't think they will be selling at the best price we local are getting.

I hope we do not lebel a shop "not honest" when someone bought a Nikon D90 at price between $1650 to $1980 because that is not fair to the shop. One can only blame itself for not doing homework, but there is nothing wrong with the shop, if want to blame then it should be manufacturer who price the RRP wrongly.

let talk about apple Ipod, most of the shop should not sell higher then RRP or there is not much discount, the most $10?

reason being the margin for apple product is very very low. (almost the whole SG is the same)

question is how the shop survive selling apple product if the profit margin is very low? they actually try to sell 3rd party accessories which has a higher margin and to cover the profit.

what I am trying to say here is, even if you got your main product cheap but you may spending more money on the accessories.

good luck!

John 3:16 is always busy. Look for Samuel, the owner's son. He'll offer good advice and demonstrate taking a picture of you to showcase the cameras.

Alternatively, as "Photobum" said, if you don't mind walking, look for Louise at Edison Electronics (Level 1, Sim Lim Square).

John 3:16 (only if you have time because it's very crowded on Sat and after office hours), usually I can spend 1+ hour there. Best service around, do look them up in existing threads

Tk's good as well, prices reasonable

Cathay's got the one of the widest range of products

My 2 cents worth

to be frank...

after a few incidents of obsurdly overcharging by alan photo and max photo.

i have stop visiting them for at least 3 years....

and for alan photo. i have never stepped into their shop for 3-4years at least...

first. they dun know what they are talking,

second. they charge locals a different price, and tourist a different price. (say what they like. i have learnt my lesson from them)

third. once u decide to get the item, u ask them if u can pay by credit card or what other then cash... they will say "wait i check the item still have ornot.... comes back 5mins later and tell u.. sorry no stock"

seriously... i would go cathay, ms color, or Op... anytime man ! as for john3:16... hahahaha.... they have wonderful service. and i have bought 2 canon pns from them in one short. they would know who i am... hahahahahaha...
