which is a better camera?

Or you could buy a Fuji XT-1 if you want something that looks like a classic film camera and not a haphazard cross-breed between a film and digital camera

Ah I see. My last check the high ISO performance, image quality and AF ability for XT-1 were way below par. Using my criteria it is most useful as a decorative item (classic film look) and expensive paper weight. IMHO only.

If you're concerned about those, you can always go for a D600/D610/D800/D4. I only said that if you want your camera to look like a film camera and still be decent, you can use the XT-1.

Anyway, this discussion has gone way beyond the original topic. This is about a comparison between D90 and D7000, not about options that cost way more than double the budget.

I had a D90 before and is using D7000 now. I prefer the D7K mainly due to the much wider dynamic range while shooting high contrast scenes. I seldom shoot very low light using iso3200, both are noisy although d7k is more usable. I find D90 image way cleaner at low iso up to 640 while I can already see noise at iso400 on the d7k when I pixel peep but if you don't peep, D7k image is generally better. I agree with macromarlin that the af-lock on d90 seems more accurate. D90 is lighter for travelling also.

Buy a camera within your budget and get really good lens. Leave a bit of money to buy photography books. Invest in a hard drive to save all those photos. Spend your time taking photos and participating in contest. After reading this thread, don't come back again. Go snap some photos.

FWIW I have the D800 and Df. Don't need the 10 fps or weight of D4. Criteria include high res, high ISO and good AF. So whether a piece of equipment is junk is highly dependent on criteria.
Please don't make sweeping statements. Please.
For TS - there is no comparison between D90 and D7000. Unless cost is an issue go for D7000. Not even close.

You are starting this by making statement in this thread that Df is an overpriced junk.
But let's get back to the topic. :)

If TS only want to choose between D90 vs D7000, the main advantage of D7000 over D90 are focusing system, max resolution, video, max shutter speed, and the age.

D7000:16 MP vs D90:12 MP
D7000:39 AF points vs D90:11 AF points
D7000:Full HD vs D90:not Full HD
D7000:1/8000sec vs D90:1/4000sec
D7000:announced in 2010 vs D90:announced in 2008

It is quite easy to choose between D7000 or D90.

If budget constraints can consider d5100. Not sure how is d5100 compare to d7000. Some say af is slower

You can consider D5100 if you are looking for flip LCD screen, smaller and lighter body.
Else, go for D7000. D7000 AF should be faster with focus motor in the body.

If you can increase the budget, go for D3300. The latest cheapest 24MP Nikon DSLR.

Overpriced junk, and out of TS budget anyway

If there was a camera that should have that slogan, it should be the Fuji XT-1 (in my opinion)

Anyway, personally I'd get a second hand D7000. If it doesn't fit the budget, just save up a bit more (I don't think it will be way over 500)

Haha...overpriced junk...
