However, there's one setback; it looks funny... trust me, people always ask me why I do that - fitting a food container over the flash head... only photographers understand why..

LOL:bsmilie::bsmilie:.... That's really funny bro! LOL...
Will try to made one whenever possible. LOL...
Btw, may I know what is the diameter & depth of the plastic container?:D
And thanks a lot for sharing man.

Well... the lid is about 4inches across, the base should be around 3inches, & depth is about 3inches...

This really worked wonders to all my indoor & outdoor flash shots, it renders a very soft & diffused lighting around subjects, making it appear naturally lit, & indoors it kills all shadows around subjects, lending it a very softbox effect.... love it.. but hate the stares I get outdoors...

... my cousin would poke fun at me by asking what I had for breakfast or lunch whenever I used it.. :bsmilie::bsmilie:

NOTE:
Oh and by the way, remember to add about one stop (+0.5 to +1) depending on translucency of the food container... if you intend to bounce off higher ceiling at condos or landed property, (+1) is necessary...don't try Tupperware, too thick, costs more, & plastics used may not be truly white...

How abt a home-made diffuser for pop-up flash? For close ups, the pop-up is usually to strong as well...

Same thing; just use a small round translucent sauce container...
but must remember to compensate flash by about +1 stop...

..or use a white translucent film canister; cut an opening on the side wide enough to fit over the pop-up flash, side ways.. only insert flash in half-way

I think those flexible plastic cover from those canned potatoe chips works well too. It looks translucent anyway.

Hi, yes it does... but the idea is to totally encapsulate the light from the flash..
any leakage from the sides can affect exposure more or less, hence my reference to a film canister with the cap firmly in place...

ideally, we want to create a soft light source...

Well, when you have taken some shots with any of the above DIY diffusers, let me know how it turned out... better still, post it here! It should look better than before...

Bounce direct will give a different effect. try it out to understand better,

OT little bit is it truth that you need to +2 step using omnibounce on SB600 the 2 step from the flash unit or body and 2 step is 0.7 or 2 i am new can someone enlighten me, thank in ahead.

It depends on what you're shooting and how far away the subject is. It can be from -0.7 to +1 or even +2 if shooting from afar.

i have totally no idea whats all these bounce that you are talking about.

I usually bounce my flash off the ceiling or the wall.

can anyone explain?

so if gary fong an omni bounce or a diffuser?

whats the diff?

BTW...i once experimented with clear plastic, pasted over my flash...compared to just an off the ceiling, result was pretty nice.

forgot to add...i crumpled the plastic (those crisp clear plastic that came with some A4 papers you buy).

anyway....whats the difference between the types of flashes?

i fail to see how putting clear plastic over your flash helps anything.

what's mentioned in the poll are some just various items that modifies the light from the flash, for example diffusion to soften the light as well as redirection. i personally use the omnibounce but all three mentioned above have their fair share of users.

i use those whitish transparent breakfast cereal plastic bag which is can hold its shape. just shape it up and rubber band it onto the flash head. i fit a bounce card before strapping the plastic bag on to direct the light forward.

used this method recently at rockmaster, not bad just that i duno how to control the old school manual flash.
