Which Broadband u prefer?

Absolute Fastest, Lowest Latency: Magix PremiumSurf 2.5Mbps :devil:
Note that if you move house, you have to pay quite a lot (~$150 in total, or last I heard)
Needs a phone line. :thumbsd:


Best Value: Starhub MaxOnline

Overseas
-Latency: Unstable (Packet Losses not Uncommon)
-Speed: UNstable, can be slower in the evenings

Local
-Latency: Good (Unstable if in congested area, Little Packet loss for local)
-Speed: Good. Constant ~190KBps (Note: Cap is set at 1.5Mbits per second, or 187.5KBps)

Grouches:
Unstable Latency, often worse than Magix
Inconsistent
In congested estates, speed and latency goes to hell.

One good thing about the cable modem is that one can unplug it and bring it anywhere in singapore to use. As long as there is a cable point and the signal strength is good enough, no problems. SCV doesn't care. (Someone enquired before)

Its like buying Holgas, if you get a nice one then you're good, if not....then fo :cry: lor..... ;p. :bsmilie:

Mine last time got promotion. First 6 months $36. For the next 1 year is $75. Singnet is unlimited connection. What's more Singnet offers free webspace(can host pictures), pop email. And of course it comes with the free ADSL modem. Next time you change plan you can sell off your modem. Heard the Powerline Broadband is starting soon. You may want to check out the price for that too.

It really depends on what you want to do with your internet. If you are thinking of doing more uploads, go for adsl, else maxonline to enjoy the almost 4 times download speed. Using maxonline do helps you to eliminate some hassles tho, such as no more dial-ups, just to name one.

If you want something better and have some spare cash, how abt getting a leased line.

Singnet and Pacnet is on my personal blacklist. ;p

Anyway, my maxonline costs only $66, works out to be $22 after dividing.

IMO, the free ADSL modem is useless. I would have to buy another one to use. Do not forget to factor in telephone line rental charges.

And yes, their "fastest" connection only offers 512kbps. Which translates to about ~60KBps or even slightly less than than already meagre amount (according to some comments). Its not value for money. Given a choice (and if cable is not avaliable), I would go for Magix Premiumsurf instead. There is a promotion (for their customers only)that allows you to subscribe at just $118.

Actually that's not true. The cap imposed by SCV for upload is 15KBps (as opposed to kbps). 128kbps will work out to be 12.8KBps, becoz every byte requires a start and stop bit, i.e., 1 byte = 10 bits.

I'm not sure whether it's using asynchronous serial transmission, 'coz if it does, then the start and stop bit would have to be taken into consideration as well.

Of cos, 1 byte still = 8 bits, just that 2 additional bits are required for the transmission.

I've done a performance test and analysis on SCV and Magix 256k before. Tested over a period of 2 weeks, on 3 remote locations - Singapore, USA and Germany. SCV scores higher on all 3 locations for downloads but Magix is consistently faster for uploads.

SCV download speeds fluctuates a lot but on average its still faster than Magix 256k (avoid peak hours).. so ... Both SCV and Magix upload speeds are quite consistent and Magix is faster.

also, installation is sooo simply...basically just plug and play

the bandwidth is huge enough for my parents to stream radio & video from HK and at the same time for me and my bro playing CS on starhub server using two PCs and get below 50ms ping

Btw, I find that doing that will result in spikes. But maybe its beacuse I like to set high rates and higher no of refreshes and transmits than normal. :embrass:

By the way, SCV's potential is certainly limited by the caps. I could get 100KBps upload and 500KBps down. Didn't try any higher, though there are some unconfirmed reports that state 700KBps.

By the way, if you're thinking of asking how to do it, don't bother, it won't work anymore. ;p

don't be confuse about bit. From the above metioned site, it is talking about IP adress. IP address is in 4 bytes, each byte is 8 bits. 4 bytes = 32 bits.

Ip address is in 4 octat format: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.

One octat = 1 byte=8 bits.

for example : 192.128.240.1 the binary will be

1100 0000.1000 0000.1111 0000.0000 0001
