Hey guys... just bought a D70... feeling a bit broke now... dunno whether to sell away my C5050Z... been reading your forum and often see the C5050 being mentioned or used... Are the photos taken really great? Can understand that the F1.8 would come in very handy indeed... But unfortunately, I am just a leisure diver... so if I were to want to bring a camera down... I might just get the PT-015 or even borrow/rent it for the dive trip... Would that alone be sufficient? or you would need all the strobe lights and stuff to get "nice" pictures? Just some questions to evaluate whether or not to sell the camera... not advertisement to sell it. So pls dun PM or post about asking price etc... Would appreciate constructive comments though. THanks in advance... :)

I owned an Olympus C-5050Z and a C-7070WZ. Used to own a Nikon D100 and C-5050Z before I sold the former away.

My reason for NOT selling my C-5050Z (even if I own a DSLR);
a) If you own the UW housing, beside diving, the C-5050 can be used for surfac ewater sports such as kayaking, boating, rafting etc.
b) For my packpacking trips to countries with no or poor electricity supply, as I can reply on disposeable batteries for my C-5050Z.
c) For family function when bringing a DSLR is much too troublesome.

Anyway, if you want to sell off your C-5050Z, I'm sure there will be plentiful of buyers, especially for divers..

Cheers.

You definitely need more than just your UW housing and C-5050Z if you are into UW photography. As a rule of thumb, any depth beyond 10 metres, you need some strong lights to illumin objects. divers who are into UW photography invest $$$ on stoke lights and other accessories, which can cost more than the camera itself!

C-5050Z is proven to produce excellent photos and a reliable workhorse. It's low power consumption, and excellent f1.8 lens make its a good digicam.

Well, it's always good to have a DSLR + P&S combo (I have a Fuji S2 + Sony V1). There'll be occasions when you just want to bring a P&S rather than lug along a DSLR (although the C5050 isn't exactly a pocketable P&S though...)

londonray, i am contemplating selling my S2 u/w setup but i am keeping my C-5050. I have toyed with the idea of selling the C-5050 more than a few times (Beivied can atest to this), but dropped the idea eventually. It is really one fine cam for u/w.

This is a pic taken in Lembeh by our now dormant moderator, Waisj, using the C-5050. One of my fav....Hope this is not leeching since i got it from some other threads in this same sub-forum.

Thanks guys! Great insight... thing is U/W photog is not really something that i am really super into... But rather something that I may do once in a while... for example if I do go snorkelling or diving on a holiday... I am not a hardcore U/W photog Enthusiast... Yup the F1.8 is really cool to have.. haha... Ok shall go scratch my head a little more...

Coz I already invested rather heavily... FL-20... Wide Angle, Tele... Remote COntrol.. Circular Polariser... Lens hood... seems a waste to just let it go like that... haha... maybe give to bro.. use as "home + family + holiday" camera... haha... then wun really waste it... Btw, if I wanna "borrow/rent" PT-015 housing from one of u guys... just for simple Snorkelling pics, is that possible? coz shelling out 2-300 for 1 time diving/snorkelling trip seems rather waste of $... hehe... :)

:sweatsm: don't make me malu lah....

btw, i didn't tell u what else he used to take this shot other than his C-5050....but that is another story.

sorri eric.... I have to disagree with that...i have owed many Oly and find that the Battery life of C-5050 suck...

if you have a C-5060 or C-7070...u know what i mean...

i agree on this. siaoon's 5060 battery life outlasts mine any time.

fellas, relax lah. Low power consumption must be relative against something for comparision. We don't know what he is comparing it against.

So long that it lasts till u max out the CF card, it should be sufficient since u need to open the housing again. Some can only afford a 512 mb. some 8 gig. Different users have different milage.

Then we get into the comparison between price of additional AA batteries vs propretiary lithium battery.

But I notice the C-5050 generates more heat than the C-5060, leading to possible fogging of lens. So that is a good point on C-5060.

sounds very true... esp in colder waters, very apparent.. e.g. lembeh trip ..

In fact, this is a very important point....

Let me relate an incident recently at Sipadan....

on a dive to a site to shoot pygmy SH....while diving on the way to the location.. I didnt shoot anything fearing that the lens might fog out...as it happen just a dive b4 and it happen quite offen when u shoot with macro lens attached...especially stack....also dont know whyy also..

so your conclusion..??? Dylan always have this problem.. anyone also have such experience

almost everyone has that problem . mine minimal as i always off the LCD screen. dunno if that helps.

it doesnt..:dunno:

I believe its the rechargable batt....they generate too much heat....expecially if they are old...

There's always a positive side of things.

Murphy's law says that whenever your housing fogs up, you're very likely to have a very major encounter, such as coming across a whaleshark :D

Back to topic, it's so common to fog up a d-cam housing no matter how many packs of silica gel you place in the housing.

my camera actually never fogged up since aug 2003, but on this lembeh trip, almost every dive it fogged up, especially after i shoot beyond 40 shots. i really tried a lot of methods to prevent it from fogging up, but just hopeless lor.

i dun think the heavy humidity caused by everyday rain there helped...

oh, and i off the lcd after finish shooting every subject too ... used to be just powersave, but at lembeh, after all that fogging, i switch off the lcd after shooting..

no wonder we see siaoon's pics but not yours.....all fogged up

Hehe.. personally felt that the C-5050Z was satisfactory on power consumption. It's relatively.. anyway, being diving with my C-5050Z so far, didn't encountered any problem even at deep dive (~100ft).. oh.. do agreed on the fogging of the lens (or rather within UW housing), but it happened only when I'm doing deep dive. And I thought that's due to water vapor in housing consdensing in the housing? Haha.. Anyway, just got my UW housing for my C-7070, time for a weekend dive soon ... Cheers.
