Where to buy IR filter: to replace hot mirror in front of image sensor inside D70

Hi All,

Where can I buy filter already cut to replace the anti-aliasing filter right in front of the sensor on my D70.

Basically I want to convert my D70 into an IR camera, and so I'll need this small cut-out filter. R72 or ELP better?

Many thanks!

I'm only guessing, but the DIY side of me says, get the R72, something used, or even new, and take it to an optical shop. Have them cut it to the size you require. Maybe a glazier could do it, not hard really.

Thanks Gary! Good suggestion. I have 52mm R72 filter that I'm playing around.

My concern is if thickness of R72 filter is similar to AA filter inside D70?

The thickness ain't the same (Hoya ~ 2mm; D70/D70S ~ 1.33/1.34mm) but there are ways around it.

Do contact "Fatigue" should you require more assistance or information.

If I remember correctly, the thickness of Hoya R72 is 2.5mm.
Based on my limited experience, some hoya R72 filters have small bubbles inside the glass.
And because the filter will be used near the sensor, this will result in spots in your images.
This is also the reason why it's not advisable to use a used filter. A minor scracth on the filter could affect your images.

I get my custom-made filters from an overseas supplier. They make the filter according to my specified thickness and cut-off
but they require MOQ

You can try using ELP IR cast filter. IIRC, the thickness is 1.5mm, easy to cut and locally available.
But using this filter may require minor focus adjustment.

Wow! Thanks very much yyD70S and fatigue for detailed info.

It looks like a bad idea to try cutting the standard R72 filter.

Hi fatigue, not sure if you still offer service for conversion. Best is if I send my camera to you for conversion with customized filter, for whatever the cost given you are an expert. I'll send you PM

I find ELP filter gives "warmer" photos, and I prefer the kind of wavelength that R72 filters.
