Where should I meter?

the easiest would be to shoot like it is now and then push up the shadow using photoshop shadow/highlight... but of cos in return you get some noise if the pushing gets too harsh.

yes, but the LCD view is not 100% correct, so usually will view the histogram for exposure. And shoot RAW for correction of W/B in difficult/confusing lighting situation.

In Johnston case, he actually want more dynamic range to be shown (dark object brighter, while maintain bright blue sky darker), which can't be achieve by metering alone.

so in his case, he should use the gradual ND filter den, as wht u have suggested

sorry Johnston if I have hijacked ur thread..

actually for the 2 shot posted, a GND doesn't work, cos the sky and land ain't in clear cut like out in the sea, so a GND will still cover some parts of the tree/hut/temple... etc

That why I like to shoot scenery shots in lowest ISO in RAW if possible, just to cut down the noise, if recovery is needed.

That's why I suggested Circular polarizer instead for the current 2 photos.

BTW bro Johnston...love this shot..taken like for a postcard

:bsmilie: but again polariser got its limit, it doesn't work all the time.
I love to use polariser as well, always on my 12-24 unless it gets too dark or cloudy to shoot at comfortable settings

Thanx bro jusri. stay tune for more pic then. ;)
My journey thru Bangalore, Hassan, Mysore and Chennai.

It does, imaging the CPL on my Sigma 10-20mm, only a patch of the sky is bluer than other area a the 10mm  So I use Gradual ND filter more frequently on that lens.

Also, it don't work on cloudy day, certain angle to the sun, and cut down a lot of the lighting.

So, each device got it own advantage and disadvantage. And the bad thing is you need to keep so many of them while travel

bravo bro catchlights! just seeking alternative and advise. thought might be my metering error. shots taken with KM 17-35mm, i dont have a CPL for 77mm thread.

i think you didn't do too badly actually. the exposure is very slightly under, but at least you kept the blue skies. you can lighten the shadow areas a little in photoshop if you want.

Thanx bro pai. my PS skill very very limited.

Just came back from India. Pretty disappointed with most of my shots. Of cos, mainly are touristic shots. Nothing I can 'wow' about. The surrounding lightings are just too challenging for me! Till the fact that I just dont know where to meter. Most of my shots turned our crappy. Most of my shots I took are -0.5EV cos I felt that the sunlight was just too strong. And the result........sad. Any bro can advise me what I should have done so that I can improve.

Hi Bro...

Err....looks like near high noon shots.......

Use Average metering. Meter by the Scene - in these cases.
Some simple tips..If you are looking at the scene...and you eyes are squinting due to the "indirect diffuse glare" then bump up your EV. to about 1/2 to 1 stop. But watch out the overall brightness range of scene infront - if its a silhoutte shot then no way you will get a balance exposure withouth doing things like fill in flash.

Brightness range of the scene is very important. Too early in the noon or late morning shots will typically result in a high sky /cloud to subject dynamic range that may result in extreme range that you cant meter once and solve by a single shot. You need two or more shots to get a HDR - on tripod of course - use your bracketing function on your camera.....

Hard to get all ...ie both shadow and highlight if they at both extreme for proper exposure.

For Photo #1 you can actually try reposition yourself at the other far end and look back. In this case the sun light is lighting the structure more rather than casting the shadow. Of course it will change the photo you are trying to capture.

For photo #2, it's under a shade, hence not easy to get a one correct exposure for both highlight and shadow.

Actually, what u have done is correct. Under such extreme situation, it is always safer to properly expose or even slightly underexpose for the highlight area. Because once the highlight area is blown out, you can never bring it back.

There are surprisingly a lot of details you can bring back from the shadow. Though there might be some noise present, but that can be easily taken care off.

The shadow/highlight function is really an invaluable tool that I found myself using very often. As with all post processing, subtlety is the key.

I hope you don’t mind I use two of your pics for demo.

u don need any PS skill to do that... just use shadow/highlight option and adjust the bar to your liking
