Where is the best place to buy dry cabinent? Any Rec?

i am thinking of getting the DHC-80 dry cabinet but has a question to ask...perhaps it may sound dumb...

i just want to ask you is that once the dry cabinet has reach its desired humidity level at 40%, can i switch off to save electricity? will the level go up if I do not open the dry cabinet as I assume that its air tight dry cabinet. If its not air tight, i dont think it is a good dry cabinet to have.

DHC-80 is the professional version... once it reach the desired humidity level.. the blue light will be off.. so it is already saving electricity..

I think carrefour is about the cheapest already. Cannot expect to pay the same price as a dry box. Besides, carrefour also delivers for expenditure above $150.

If I'm not wrong, most digi-cabi models will automatically turn off the drying unit once humidity reaches the set level - just like an aircon thermostat.

Carrefour & Digital Point sells at the same price (which is the lowest among those I have checked). Got mine from Digital Point and they do deliver to your doorstep too. :thumbsup:

The dry cabinet is air-tight but the drying unit isn't. If drying unit is air-tight too, then it can't possibly work at all to reduce the moisture level in cabinet.

btw dry cabinet power consumption is only 5W. So I don't really see a big concern here.

Most of today modern dry cab use peltier/thermocouple technology as a device (dehumidifier unit) to move humidity inside the dry cab to outside.

The dehumidifier unit have a sponge that when wet, it act as a seal for air, but will pass the water (from condensation of dehumidifier cold side inside the dry cab) to outside (to evaporate water to air, using dehumidifier hot side outside the dry cab).

So, ideally the dry cab is air tight, but too bad, the door's seal is not.

The saving by cut off dry cab electricity is not much. But dry cab is not like refrigerator that take a lot of power when turn on. Some more, the DHC series (pro series) does cut the dehumidifier power when humidity inside reach set point.

FYI, blue silica gel contain cobalt chloride as a blue color humidity indicator. Cobalt chloride known as carcinogen agent (cancer caused agent).

ya i know. i still havent decided shld i get 60 litres or 80 litres? if i get 80 litres i feel that i din fully utilised it.

you could try planning by looking at what u will buy... for eg, in the near future, what u think u will get, like what bodies/lenses/flashes/accessories... the work it out from there..

do consider prices too..i bought akarui from cathay and was choosing between 2.. eventually got the bigger one coz the price difference was very small.. so my cabinet is now quite empty.. haha..reasons to BBB...

I give you guys a scenario:
- The place that you are going to keep the cabinet is relatively small area (my study room)
- It will definately take more than 5 years for me to upgrade to better camera to have the next adverture either 1.3x or full frame dslr camera.
- This 5 years estimated: once a year or every two years I will buy a new lens to play around due low budget set aside for this expensive camera hobby (Saving money for my new house and wedding etc)
- If I buy a big cabinet, most likely it will be very empty or i will put my textbooks inside it or worse still put all the rubbish inside(hopefully not in this case, as I have too many textbooks lying around due to my further studies).

Is it wise for me to buy a big cabinet AD-60, AD-70, AD-80, DHC-60 or DHC-80 now or should i just buy 30litres cabinet ($99 thats sort of dry cabinet)? After 5 years than i buy another big cabinet, whereas the old one maybe sell away (i guess its very slim chance that people wants) or give to someone else.

Pls advise....

I am using a 30L, 2 shelves, that is enough for 2 SLR bodies (D70s and D80), three lenses (18-70mm, 18-200mm and 50mm f/1.8), and a speedlight (SB800). A littel squeezy, but still no problem. Can probably fit another lens in too. I paid only $99 for it I think - and it fits into a little nook in my living room, very unobstructive.

I agree with zoossh that <60L is more than enough for you now and the next 5 years.

I am using a 60L, 3 shelves, currently holding 2 SLR bodies, 4 lenses, some filters and 2 other compact cameras. There is still room for at least another 3 lenses or even more, depending on how tight you like to squeeze your equipment. As for flash, strictly speaking, there is no need to keep it in the dry cabinet, but if you have the space, why not?

I agree that you really need to relook at your budget and definition of "cheap". Perhaps you are not really suited to go into a hobby of photography, if all you think about is saving money everywhere. While it is a good virtue to be thrifty, you need to be realistic and spend carefully when needed. As they say, you can get rich by being cheap, but you will always be a cheapo.

Look through the forums and pricelists and other information available, and get the best deals. Work on your budget. Photography is a hobby (unless you decide its your profession), so spend only above your daily needs. Its a luxury.

Dry cabinet do not use much electricity. So you won't save much. Anyway, the dry cabinet is not a vacuum. So humidity will go up if the humidifier is not working.

First off, plan your budget. Get your priorities right. Why would you need to buy lenses every other year? Your budget is of concern, then just stick with 1 body and 1 lens (the most 2) and if necess a flash and a simple tripod. Make do with what you have. You can get great photos with a DSLR and kit lenses, if you know how to use it.

Having said that, you don't really need a large dry cabinet, if cost is a concern. Do a cost comparison and get the most cost effective cabinet. You could choose a cabinet with the right dimension for your room. Of course, space is still a premium, so if you get a larger one, you will have more than sufficient to store stuff.

I wait for 5 years, and can i be first on the list for your dry cabinet when you give it away?;p

currently I have Canon 400D, canon kit lens and sigma 70-300mm apo lens and Canon EOS 500 Film Camera and its kit lens (Maybe give to me by my friend - Not confirm)

which one I should go for?
