have you asked what the he** they are doing with 20 (!!) standard lenses????? What a waste!

HS

oh, you know.
cam hobbyists like to collect things.
and he got $.
I don't.

don't know details of exactly all the lenses he owns but if I recall correctly, he told me himself (got about 30 std lenses) at home.

for example, just for std lens (roughly 40mm to 50mm range)
Leica has got the following range:-

leica got collapsible elmar f3.5, screw mount version, M mount version, made in canada version, made in germany version, hektor 50mm f2.5, 50mm summar f2 rigid version & collapsible version, xenon 50mm f1.5, summitar 50mm f2, chrome barrel, black barrel,
elmarit 40mm f2.8 ( for Leica CL very compact), summicron 40mm f2 also for leica CL, anastigmat 50mm f3.5, elmar 50mm f2.8 post 1957 version, summarit 50mm f1.5, "spectacle" 50mm near focus version summicron,
F2 summicron, f1.4 summilux, yah, he also got F1.2 noctilux, Leica got 2 versions of noctilux. the F1.0 version and the F1.2 version, they collect all these...and then some.....special editions (leica loves to issue special editions), special anniversary versions,
some versions they like, they buy two.

don't forget the Minolta lenses made for the Minolta CLE.

actually friend got MORE than 20 but I was just being conservative, because others who don't understand this leica M collecting mania find it hard to believe.

now you know why I gave up. :bsmilie:
I surrender. by the time collect all these, bank account $0.00
but agree with sze kiat, different strokes for different folks.
keep what you like.

I know this guy (I think). If he is indeed the one, then I can tell you he is not really rich but he just likes to collect OLD leica stuff alright and spent tons of $$$$ on them. He has very limited knowledge of leica and is very easily influenced by his "good friend" (hai, someone who sells mostly Leica for a living), who told him that old leica lenses are much better than the new ones because of the special glass used. So, over 10 years or so, he has collected almost all the old leica standard lenses that you mentioned (plus other "collectible" lens such as zeisss sonnar 50 in Leica screw mount, wow! very rare, very rare ah!!). But his pix is so ..... that I just don't know how to put it... (But then, when his "good friend" told him his pix "chin shui" and he would feel chin happy liao!) :( Unbelievable story but sadly, true.

Sorry, this is way OT :D

I think I know this guy too! Is he the one wif lotsa white hairs? He is indeed very funny lo...bought a Leica MP black paint one then change to a used classicLeica M6 0.85 (coz he heard from ppl that it is rare). Then again he find that the M6 is not good as he told us that the MP's finder is brighter and much better than the M6, he changed to his MP once again. Stupid right?
As for his photographic skills, his skill is so lousy that I really dunno how to comment on them...he better take some photographic lesson. He even take plates of finished char-kway-teow, isn't that classic???
He is really a shame in the Leica world... :(

Hey! Why is everybody talking bad about me behind my back? What's wrong with my pics? As long as I am happy taking (lowsy) pics....who cares? Must everyone owning a Leica be making better pics?..........cannot make lowsy ones, ah? As long as I am happy taking pics, I am happy, mah!

I love my (full) dry cabinet!

Oh, so you are the one taking pictures of char kway teow! :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

No worries, I am sure that there are people who are 10 times worse at taking photographs as compared to you, like me for instance!

sorry, OT.

I think the person YOL 925 and I refer to is different from the one XXXboy mentioned.

Just to clarify, he is genuinely a very nice guy. I like him.
He is humble and perhaps a little misled by a mercenary "friend" who wanted to sell off lots of Leica M things to him. You know those "friend" who can smell whether you got money, and when you do, they stick to you; and when you have no more money, they don't know you or become very cold and distant.

Whether he takes nice pics or not, I don't care.
I myself am not so great a photographer. So better not comment on others' photograpic skills. What? no FRPS? no international photo contest 1st prize awards? no Cultural Medallion?

and anyway, whether we have full dry cabinets of cams is our business.

Certainly not my intention to talk about his skill (so edited my earlier post accordingly). Just trying to share why someone would keep more than 20 standard lenses. Yes, it is certainly his own business to burn his $$$$ on lenses and to carry on taking those dreamy pix, as long as he likes it.

I feel that it is a waste lo...rather I would spend more time on taking pictures than to collect lenses lo....then again it is my own thinking lo....and somemore I am not like him lo..so many $$$ to spend!!!

Does anyone knows what is the price in Singapore for a brand new Voigtlander 125 mm / 2.5 APO Lanthar lens ?

Appreciate for the help ?

Oh, have discussed with Ikax in PM sometime before.
Ikax is still studying.
And it seems he left his Contax camera and few lenses at the shop, with the idea of letting anthony sell them off so that Ikax can buy voigtlander stuff.
As you all know, later anthony closed his shop.
Ikax contacted anthony some time ago and it was confirmed anthony no longer has Ikax's equipment.
So think carefully before you leave stuff to sell in shops.
It also happened previously many years ago when DSO suddenly disappeared.
People who left many thousands of $ of equipment at the shop to sell on consignment, panicked. No chance to get it back.

I think a bit of discretion and common sense goes a long way. It's kinda improper to declare that selling through consignment is a sure way to lose all your equipment. A shop with a long established history, owner and salespeople with good attitude and honest practices will likely fare better than some of the fly by night operators.

I had an episode with him when I was trying to offload some equipment to him. Let's just said I'm glad I didn't have any dealings with him at all. He might be nice to some but I just don't see how, from day 1.

Hi

According to Sean Reid's tests (which you can find on Luminous Landscape), some CV lenses are outstanding and approaches the level of Leica's equivalent offerings, at a third of the price....

Actually, even before reading that test, I was already beginning to feel that the saying "it's the lens that matter" isn't quite correct. Yes, the M lenses are possibly the world's best 35mm lenses (sorry Ricohflex, i have a different opinion of the R lenses :P), but nothing quite approaches the tactile FEEL of a Leica M body.....

I think I would feel very comfortable using a CV lens on a M body and not feel that anything is different, but use a M lens on a Bessa, or any other Cosina variant body, and immediately, something feels different. Not quite right. The experience is changed..... it sounds different (LOUDER) , it feels different, and it will take some time to get used to it....

Of course all that feely stuff doesn't make any difference to the final image, which is probably what that matters most :)
