Where is an actual thread of pictures TAKEN with the 5DIII ?

Yes, cosplay events is ok with flashes, and to me, it is a must-equipment to bring, along with flash modifiers. it's rather dark inside, you'll need a flash and some good light modifiers to capture the face nicely.

In fact, I bring my 580EXII with me almost 100% of the time, with min 1 light modifier. I find it very useful even in board daylight for fill flash to bring out the face better, because of strong ambient (sunlight) light.

If taking things like flowers, can do some off hotshoe strobes too :D

Yup good :) Too bad my stofen and lightsphere can no longer fit my 600EX-RT... Need to spend more money :(

use the white plastic bag trick first lo.. cut the white plastic bag and rubber band it over the flash head :D

Is the bokeh supposed to be oval?

Yes, it is normal for a lens to have oval shap bokeh in certain conditions when wide open. That includes many large aperture primes, like 85L and many 50/1.4.

Stopped down slightly and given right condition, you will get the rounder balls. Although, I honestly don't know the physics behind it.

The shape of the bokeh balls depends on the number of blades for your lens.

For lens like 50mm f/1.8, it has only 5 blades for aperture control. so your bokeh will look like a pentagon.

For better lens like 50L, it has 8 blades, so the bokeh will look rounder. :)

Aperture blades is just part of the equation. Rather than circle vs oval shap, it probably accounts more for the pointed polygon shape vs circular shape. Anyway, I believe the sigma 150mm here has 9 rounded aperture blades, which means it is probably already overkill.

Rounded because of more blades or because it's circular blade design?

rounded because of more blades. 5 blades, when they close down, you will notice it forms a pentagon. 8 blades when closed down, you will see a octagon. bascially, the mode edges the more the shape is closer to a circle, thus the bokeh looks nicer.

if you have a large aperture lens like f/1.2 to f2.8, you can actually have some fun with it. go manual mode, select f-stop like f/8-f16, set shutter speed to about 2-4 sec for the aperture to close long enough. look through the front element, you will be able to see the shape :)

EDIT: Silly me, you can also see the shape by setting a high f-stop and press the depth of field preview button when looking through the front element :p

It depend on design... hv eight blade circular n noncircular too...

*post removed. I made a mistake. Sorry!

Sorry for going off topic but this pic is awesome because this cosplay (Zessica Wong from Aquarion EVOL) is being done by the actual voice actress (花澤香菜 Hanazawa Kana)

Imagine a cosplayer who not only looks like the character but SOUNDS liker her as well!

What in God's name are you saying. Dude, it's no longer April Fool's.

That is not Kana Hanazawa. A simple Google Image search of her name in Romanji shows the correct person. And seriously, she is too high profile to do such a thing at the event and not get mobbed.

Actually, flash will bring out the brightness of their faces and better overall contrast. Can shoot at ISO 6400 does not mean you should be doing it, depending on the event and scenario. Cosplay events are usually ok with flashes :)

5d3 is very capable of capturing ambient light, reflector for fill can already ba.. ~w~

Oh. Sorry. I stand corrected.

5d3 is very capable of capturing ambient light, reflector for fill can already ba.. ~w~

If the event is indoors, I don't think a reflector can be of any use...

yes 5D3 is very capable, but as usual, the colour accuracy starts to deteoriate when your ISO goes higher. rather inevitable, and the light in these conventions is really dim and messy. prefer to have own flash and light modifiers :p

ahh yes pardon me.. =w=U
indoors have varients, most indoor cosplay events i attend to have backlits which are strong..

i suppose the indoor condition you refer to are the more jialat one..

which events you've went, at where?

For me, the cosplay events I've went are all in SG.. If you are in SG, I suppose you've went to AFA? To me AFA = very jia lat. Light blocked by all the exhibition stations and people..

EDIT: Saw your blog - big like to your figurine shoots! looks very nice and looked as if they were real human. And you must have a big collection of figurines huh? :p
