I see most ppl here use flickr over picasa, very curious. I wan to start a portfolio, but dunno how to do it. =( advice needed, thanks.

I also recent use flickr. not too sure what you mean how to do it wo.
Erm... i am no pro frankly, i just started photography and had created a flickr account. not too sure if there is anything i can help.
When you mean how to do it is how to upload or how to create settings or how to add friends/groups?

Just create an account in flickr and upload your photo. If you want a blog, create an account in the blogger or whatever blogspot website and start uploading entries and photos.

Flickr is free and easy. However you can only upload 300mb of photos per month and a maximum of 200 photos regardless. By the time you got to 200, You can upgrade your account to a PRO account which only costs $20 a year.

erm i only store them in my external harddisk. lol... and update to facebook as and when i feels like.

Norman ar, purely because of the community.
They got very big group of users. you go to the 'Group' search, you can find alot of other group ( For me its the beginner ones that attract me cause see them take the picture as newbie is super inspiring)
Then very me, i quite software idiot one... and i find that its easy to use.
For pricing wise, interms of subscription, all give the same unlimited at the end of the day and charges are around the same.
For free usage, picasa give more space then flickr.

Login wise, i just use my google gmail account to login. then can also create a blog. in Flickr, it gives you a share link to directly post to your blog with a short description. So i thought it was nice to have such a function. the blog is link to blogspot de.

Hope this help.

You want to use it to store photos or to showcase?

My advice is if you really want to show your best photos, Flickr is not the best way to do it. A personalised website is best, you can google a bit to find out more about how to do it, loads of resources and advice on the internet.

If you're lazy, you can always use Zenfolio, Pbase, Smugmug, etc, which are more catered to "showcase portfolio". Flickr is more of a social-cum-photo-sharing site, honestly.

really appreciate ur help, I tot sharing n showcase is the same thing. now I know its a totally diff thing aft googling ard. tats a nice info, thanks!

you will use flickr to be part of a community, think of it as FB for photography.
you will use your personal website for a full-on portfolio. followers on flickr can easily be re-directed to your personal website should they want to view it.

cheers!
