Where can I shoot in Melbourne?

Too bad, as most of the scenic places in state Victoria are all located out of melbourne city.
you must take day trip to great ocean drive....great scenery = great pic. Bring ya polarizer.
Q Victoria market , Burke St and Swanston are good for street photo.
Go to St Kilda and stroll along the beach.
Since u r on a budget, suggest u buy the met card where u can travel on the bus, train and tram unlimited.

Was wondering if anyone cld help as in recommending any smaller car rental companies that do not have P plate restrictions.. the big firms.. aka hertz.. budget.. avis all require the car renters to have at least 12 mths of driving experience.. thing is my friend got the license in march this year.. so well..

i've stayed in melbourne for some time and i can tell you that unless you're over 25, it would be quite unlikely that you can rent a car.
if you're over 25, an alternative is for you to go on the internet to source for car rentals instead of the bigger car companies.
as for where to go, i would recommend federation square. they have just completed it and the view is great on a sunny day. flinders station is right next to fed sq and is a good landmark. the church there is pretty grand too. burke street mall is great for pictures especially with the christmas decor and swanston street is great for taking passing trams.
rent a vehicle and drive to yarra valley. great views, good food (and wine). some of the vineyards are really nice. drive to great ocean road for the sea view.

i disagree. yup you get great scenery outside and driving does help but melbourne is full of old style buildings and you can get many great shots around the city.
more places to go:
albert park has a great view (grand prix is held here). botanical gardens at south yarra. walk along the yarra river and soak the atmosphere. go to crown center and south bank to take people pictures.
drink coffee... go to torak road and walk down the trendy street of melbourne (taking photos)... much more.
also, go for the tulip festival... BEAUTIFUL!!!! tulips of all colours...

Just in case really can't rent a car.. I know there's a coach to take from melbourne to lorne.. roughly how much will the coach ride be and how long does it take.. and do I need to make an advance booking? Many thanks to all who have replied! I just went to the library to borrow some travel guides on Melbourne too. I'm on a free & easy tour, just wanna make sure that I plan my itinerary carefully, so that I won't feel lost when I reach there :bsmilie:

go to yahoo australia and type in victoria car rental.
get the list of rental companies be it hertz etc and send each one a mail telling them that you are under 25yrs. you may still be able to rent a vehicle but at a higher (insurance) rate.
alternatively, there is a day trip to great ocean road (and lorne), to the penguin island (philip island) which also includes a trip to a animal reserve (see kangaroo, koalas etc up close and personal) and other places. the place to get the day trips is located along swanston street (cnr of burke street), near to the nike superstore. it has three inconspicous booths side by side and will pick you up from most hotels/motels or alternatively at an agreed location.

i'm sorry to be hogging the thread but i really hope that everyone who visits melbourne has a great time.

Please remember to wear your sunnies, wear a safari hat (baseball cap not enough), apply your sunscreens (slip, slap, slop everyone! ) and put your polarizer on in the day time. Melbourne in Jan is very hot and dry, esp near the Aussie open; drink lots of water!. Another thing that you may find irritating is the flies...

Enjoy yourselves! Just thought I'd point out that it's possible to rent cars even if you're under 25, but you'll have to pay extra for insurance. Even though your friend got his license this year, he may still be able to rent a car even as long as it's not a Victorian license, since the people may not always notice the "Pass" date on the Singapore license.
Also, another place that's near the city would be Brighton Beach and Port Melbourne.

oh, if u can afford to bring a light tripod, fitzroy gardens is fabulous at night.
u will need to pay to go up Rialto towers at night but the view is mindblowing :bigeyes:
on Saturdays, (dunno if they still do this) go to Crown casino where the tramstop is and get ready for the spouts of balls of fire that they pump into the air at night...hmmmmmm can't remember if they did that in Summer though (A)
MAKE SURE U VISIT MELBY's museum, i missed out on that when i was there studying :cry:
even Uni melby's faculty of architecture looks so grandeur. BTW if u noe where the faculty of law is....go there...the low ceilings forms a square (issit called Moot court liao ah? can't remember liao) and there's this one big all rose tree

By the way, there's this Christmas display going on in Crown. Not sure how nice it is though, cos the last time it was a little dark and I was just walking through. Didnt really stop to see what was going on cos I was late for a movie.
