When would you use the 50mm f/1.8 and when would you use the D70 kit lens?

Just bought the 50mm f/1.8 from MS Colour. I have to admit, it is truly a wonderful pair of lens. Took some indoor shots without flash, and were really amazed by the pictures.

I beg your pardon, the kit lens has SWM (Silent Wave Motor) which translates faster focusing. To me the 50mm's focusing speed is fast but not faster than the 18-70.

not necessary. reviews have found the kit lens to be not as fast as other SWM equipped/non AF-S lenses in focussing.

To get a 50mm equivalent view on a DSLR, you need something like 35mm f2. But that said, 50mm f1.8 is a wonderfull lens for portraits on a DSLR.

For those who bought the 50mm /1.8 AF/D lens recently, is it still Made in Japan or is it from the off shore factories, China/Thailand, Thanks

I feel that even the tamron 28-75 is faster than the 18-70DX. The tamron has pretty short gearing. HSM, USM, SWM doesn't mean anything. The Sigma 12-24 HSM is slow as hell, i think 5X slower than tamron. :bsmilie: They are guaranteed silent though.

Some Canon USM Ls are really fast.
