any particular skill required?

In my opinion, videographer can call himself anything in the industry...
It's not a trade or profession like Doctors or Architects where only if you've got the qualifications, then you can be called Doctor and perform surgery.

If you dare to call yourself a Cinematographer in the industry, I think you'd better have experience in handling at least 16mm motion picture cameras....have good knowledge in science (physics) especially in the areas of optics & light.

I have a Dip. in Film, a Degree in Recording Arts, and shot 2 short films with 16mm Arri cameras....even so, I still don't think I am qualified to call myself a Cinematographer. ;)

Hi Dixon,
I think u are well qualify as a DOP, Director, Technical Director, Producer, etc.. :)

When you play back your video on the home cinema equipment at home.

A Cinematographer or Director of Photography would be one that not only understands how to create great moving pictures but can also execute them.

What is involved in this creation?
- Lighting
- Framing
- Choice of camera movement
- Choice of camera shots with consideration of post-production
- Other creative choices

It has TOTALLY nothing to do with the camera units or systems he is capable of using.

A Videographer generally does News Gathering type of video production. Capturing the events of the moments. Think documentary style.

What is involved in this field?
- Framing for the moment
- Field instinct, Anticipation and quick reflexes
- Choice of camera shots with consideration of post-production

Both has its art. The sigma would be that a DP/Cinematographer would be more glam/famed than a videographer, but both has its market and niche. =)

By popular definition, cinematographer is the person working on film (I mean 16mm, 35mm, etc).

Videographer, obviously, works on digital video.

But does that mean a cinematographer is certainly better than a videographer? I have certainly seen better videos than films.

Just a name to be call, if the end production is so-so, you call what name also no use.:bsmilie:

Well said everyone.....I just hope with better knowledge and understanding, our film industry will grow to be more matured and professional.... and that the skills and talents of technical crew, grip/gaffers, DOPs, cinematographer, videographers, location sound recordists, editors, etc...will all be valued upon and appreciated.

Only with recognition and healthy competition that our trade & profession will improve for the better.

when you decide to charge your clients more $. and they buy it.

lol. when somebody hire you as one.

when your producer stop asking you to double up as soundman :bsmilie:

When you have shot stuff that is actually screened in a... CINEMA?

when you level up and get a class change

When you sneak into a cinema to video the movie. That was how some early pirate DVDs of new movies were made for sale.

IMHO, a cinematographer is just a title for someone who takes up the role whose responsibility and skillsets are not only limited to the techniques and creative inputs in achieving the look of the final product, it aslo entail human resource management, negotiation skills, crisis management and expectation management skills. :) And yes, I, too, believe it has nothing to do with what camera systems we use to make the films. Cinematography is cinematography is cinematography, regardless of film or video.

When you are good enough to not worry about how to do it, and start wondering what's the best way to convey your story through moving images. ;)
