Whats is a ideal potrait lens on a M9.

I almost part money on a 75 Summarit, but was told to wait for the Summicron as they say no one buys a Summarit in Singapore.

Is this true?

I just bought a M9 last week and I can't get the leica lens i wanted, so I got a Zeiss 35 f/2 first. Not a bad lens. :)

I managed to get a 50 cron non 6 bit coded and a mint 28 cron 6 bit coded both used.

Don't think... just get the 75/f1.8 for portraiture. Nothing beats the price with that quality.

50mm summitar :)

M-Hexanon 90mm f2.8 :). Smooth bokeh, portait focal length, very good for H&S portraits.

can pass u my VC 75mm/1.8 to try... you want?

The 90mm is a good choice for a portrait lens. The current Apo-Asph version is sharp from f2.0 onwards. This might be too much of a good thing, unless you like to show lines or wrinkles on someone's face! The pre-Asph version, has a softer rendition wide open with a small amount of vignetting in the corners. The OOF area, bokeh, is smooth. But stop down to f5.6 onwards this lens is sharp from centre to the corners. I have both these lenses, the Apo-Asph version in M mount and the pre-Asph version in R mount.

I posted a couple of images at f2.0 and f8.0 here,http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7012590#post7012590

:thumbsup: Agreed. It's an excellent lens and best of all a Sonnar design!

Agree! You can get better but it will cost you alot more.

There is nothing wrong with Summarits, they just don't sell as well because to alot of people associate RF with available light photography and for that you want fast lenses. The Summarits are ranked 3rd in Leica's line up, behind the f/1.4 Summilux and f/2 Summicron. So if given a choice, more often than not, people will choose the faster 2.

My favorite portrait lens is the Leica 75mm f/1.4 Summilux, they are no longer made but you can still buy them used. It is a very nice lens.

Thank you Bunn for the offer.

Like you I love taking photos of our girls, so i guess i need to own one finally.

75mm Lux, is this lens 6 bit coded.

I am only interested in Leica lens, as my good friend says i will regret if i buy something else.

Anyway i find the 90mm a bit too long for focus as i also like my subject near me, and yes i like to show the face expression even their flaws.

my 2cents:
Given a choice, i definitely get a Cron or a Lux ...i'm taking baby step first :) a digital M + Summarit should be good enuff due to ISO setting available to bump up the speed. And Summarit is easier on the wallet.

I just got a 35mm Summarit for my M6 and probably have to slow down the shutter to gain the correct exposure.

Cheers

in my opinion, the best lens for portrait are:

a. summarit 50/f1.5

b. any sonnar-type lens, eg. czj sonnar, canon 1.5, jupiter-8, jupiter-3, nikkor 1.4, Hasselblad 150/4 etc....

here are some of the sonnar type lens, aka cha-bor lens...

etc etc etc

Sonnar is the way to go for Portrait. It is soft wide open, and sharp stopped down...

I hear good things about the Summarit 75 as well as the Summicron 90 .
I will use a lens especially if no one uses it.

I think any of the sonnar lenses are great. Here's a couple I took with my Zeiss C-sonnar 50/1.5

50 Lux

The 75mm Summarit is very highly recommended by Guy from getDpi. High resolution and focusing is fast. Bokeh is good and it is ligher than the 75 crons and luxes. If you do not do low light photography, summarit line is enough for in doors use.

Some people swear by Leicas but for non asph lenses, I prefer the Zeiss. Some Zeiss do out perform their Leica counterparts. I do think that the ZM 21, 25 Biogon are in fact better than Leicas for less money in terms of distortion. If you do not need faster than F2.8 that is.

Haha...Guess, everyone has it's own definition of "ideal" portrait lens...tough isn't it...guess the fun is to slowly try them......

75mm Lux and 90mm cron are nice but heavy and big, tough to focus, need higher shutter speed to prevent handshake....not so much of a walkabout handheld lens...

60mm f1.2 hexanon LTM is a very nice, fast and compact portrait lens... Con: need external viewfinder...not easy to obtain

With 50mm focal length...compact and bright view within camera viewfinder

50mm f1.5 canon LTM Sonnar....very compact....is a very nice Mei Mei portrait lens...beautiful smooth rendition...with a classic signature.... but min. focus is 1m...so need to crop if you want tight portrait...

Like some others mentioned...50Lux pre-ASPH and 50Lux ASPH...won't go wrong too...
