The canon 35mm F2 might not be around your budget really. Good copies can fetch quite a steep price, prepare at least $800
I've got a set here on the Canon 35mm F2:

Its a 7 element lens, design same as the old cron. Never had it flare till I was in Halong Bay, where the reflection of the sunlight on the water was too strong
As jonmanjiro suggestion, the 35mm F1.7, I did see one selling its CHROME with canon 7 on RFF a couple of months back, I cant believe I let it go because I was thinking of a cron.... s h i t...........................
It rarely pops up really. Like the cv 50mm F1.5 chrome, its hard to find one around.
I use a canon 35mm F2 for my 35mm needs, being F2, its great for day but come night, its either I push the film to 1600 or change over to my cv 50mm F1.5.
Erm, I'm not too sure about softness but shouldnt be the case, the cv 35mm F2.5 has got superb reviews for its price.
Oh yea, I got a set here on the 35mm F1.4 cv as well:

was very satisfied with the lens till it got stolen
Yes, be impressed with the nokton 50mm F1.5 ltm. If you read steve huff's review & RFF, you know how good it is, my only complain is the size but hell, I got the chrome version
Nice set gary!! so tempted...haha...ya i read about ur lost, ur r3a was also gone during that trip rite?
the only chrome lens i have got is the color skopar 35mm, its de older version with a knob on focusing...
