it's just that i don't have such high standards for equipment. you want x-pan, you have to save up lor. don't moan when people wanna get a FED or Zorki worth 100 max. :blah:
just like, if cannot afford gitzo, buy manfrotto lor. at the end, the end product is all that matters and the best equipments doesn't do you any good if you can't do it justice.
don't blame circumstances but make the best of what you have.

but then hor, circumstances DO play a part in what u can have and what u can't have ;) even if they are not the best.....think my LG monitor..sama sama....

Anywayz, dun OT liao....

acherly the change alley there got a few shops , used to have to go past there everytime i went to work b4 uni.....There used to have alot of items they sell coz last time ah....during adventure camp ah.........

but donch know whats the matter, suddenly so many close shop....even now need to change foreign currency oso need to depend on some internal bank contacts to get the best rates :(

guys:

1) The shop is called Dinky-Di store and owned by Farouk. He opens about 11am to 6pm, mon - Sat except Fridays where he is closed longer for prayers. Most of the stuff is in poor condition I agree... but if you're a collector sometimes you do find interesting things.

2) The 61 L/D uses a "lanthanum" element. I don't think its radioactive... but is similar to what Sigma uses in their apo lenses. In other words, its an APO element.

3) The bodies do tend to be rough and quirky. The best compromise I find is to buy a Bessa-R body and use the soviet lenses. Japanese reliability, soviet optics. It's also my preferred travel kit at the moment.

Matched with my "R", are:
Voigtlander 15/4.5
soviet Orion-15, 28/6.3
Skopar 35/2.8
soviet Jupiter-8 , 50/2 and Jupiter-3, 50/1.5
Leica Elmar 9cm f4
(I have the soviet J-9 , 85/2 but don't use it because the Bessa's base RF is too narrow and the elmar is smaller)

Hey giddy, I think this is doable. Check out ebay, or pay faruk a visit (clifford pier overhead bridge).

From the results of my Industar-61 lens, I am beginning to feel a new sense of respect for soviet optics.

Check one example:

It an L/D (lambda/delta)

that shop near Clifford Quay is Dinky Di something... its nice to touch them, get a feel, but really the prices the guy put on all his cameras are high given their poor condition... i know you can still bargain with him, i just don't know how low you can make him go...

on buying local and overseas... i know of at least one guy in Yahoo Auctions who sell classic cameras who actually buys them from Ebay... how do i know, well he's using the same ID in both auction sites... a little research on his/her transaction history, that's how i found out... i've nothing against that guy... i would have done it myself... but if its being sold for more than x2 the price when he got it, you can't blame me for going direct to the source to have my fix...

a FED-2 at S$100... you can get it direct from Ukraine at S$40, inclusive of postage cost... the risk is greater though, of course...

last I visited Dinky Di, he's got that radioactive 61 L/D lying about... selling for S$30... if he included a rear lens cap for S$10 (read: FED-5), that would be quite a deal...

But then if buy from ebay, around S$50-60, you get a new L/D and a free FED5 body. :D

How is the condition? New or old?

Remember to cock lever b4 changing the shutter ah!
Tip #1. for landscape format and near subject like portrait, move then subject closer to lower right corner to correct the parallax ;) For portrait format, top right hand corner.

So, shoot 1 roll, you will like the result.

Fed5 got the selenium meter rite? I dunno whether u trust it or not :) can try.

Oso, i think i saw a feb3 at K13 penisula 2nd flr today.

Hi,
Thanks for your tips. It looks pretty new but there's a crack on the viewfinder. not on the rangefinder part though so i don't really care. It looked pretty ugly on pictures but when i finally got to see it in real life, it's quite beautiful. and feels very substantial too. took me a while to get use to the mechanisms of it though.
trying to meter by eye. will know the result when i develop it. probably gonna take a while to get the metering since i was weaned on autoexposure systems.
Really having fun though.

Hey giddygoat,

Congratulations on your plunge into the Soviet RF world!

Is yours the FED-5B(V)? Or the plain 5? The plain 5 or 5C(S) should have a selenium meter built in. This meter should be quite accurate in daylight situations outdoors.

Otherwise to meter with eye is quite simple and doable, especially when you use negative film, both colour or b/w. Either follow the Sunny 16 rule, or check inside the film box where there's usually a guide. Modern negative films are very forgiving(wide latitude) and even if you are 2 stops over or under exposed, your negative should still be printable with acceptable results.

Never expect these Soviet RFs to have nice viewfinders/rangefinders. They are no where near to the beautifully bright and clear viewfinders for which Leicas are famous for. If you understand how the RF system works, you will know why it is so difficult to get it right. However, I think viewfinders of the Bessa Rs and the old Nikon S series RFs can approach or exceed the quality of Leica.

Enjoy!

BTW, is anyone interested in an RF outing?
