I own the 70-200mm VR, then i got the 18-200mm VR.
They are created for different purposes, and I bought them for slightly different purposes. ( Although after I gave away my 18-200mm I had to use the 70-200mm to cover up the longer focal length )

Know what you are buying, understand its strengths and limitations, and you will not be too disappointed with unrealistic expectations.

As for whether to get third party or not, the Nikon 70-200mm is heck of a trustworthy workhorse tested since film days. I know not of the Sigma, but just get the Nikon if you got the budget

I remember when i first match 70-200VR 2.8F with D3 shoot @ seaside @ sunset. i truly surprise how nice everything turn out:thumbsup:

The 18-200mm lens is good for general purpose. However, you may wish to note that the 18-200mm has some issues with their durability. Do some research on dpreview. Nikon may or not aware of the issues. It has to do with the quality of the cable-fittings. Hopefully the one you buy do not have this problem.

As for general shooting, it's great. I use this a lot, and take extra care when I extend to 200mm, to do it slowly, other wise may need some servicing.

To answer the TS, 18-200 is a good all rounder. However, you have to consider what you shoot often?

Somehow thinking between nikon 70-200mm F2.8 and Sigma 70-200mm F2.8.. price diff is quite a gap.. Any suggestions ??

Don't think twice, you will not regret with Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8
;)

i own both the 18-200 and 70-200.

If there are 2 lenses you should own, its these two......

Honestly, I've owned an entire fleet in the past and decided on these 2 models as I found it (and my trustee sigma 10mm prime) addressed most avenues of entry-level to pro-sumer photography.

They also represent the most commonly used lenses on my job at Mantra Films Inc. (aka Girls Gone Wild!), so all is certainly good.....

Also I wouldnt bother waiting for the new 70-200....all it'll end up being is a cheaper-made (not price) model to cater to those who cant afford buying into the quality of the current generation.

' No two people can look at something and see the exact same thing '

I bought a Nikon D200 and asked the question ' what about the 18/200vr lens to go with it for a good walkabout lens ' the anwers were much same as here , what do I want to shoot , other lens or multiple lens options , prime lens options instead of , lens creep etc .
I went and bought one , and I'm pleased to say , it fits my needs very well indeed for both landscape and portrait and even though it was quite expensive at the time , I dont regret buying it at all because I like it very much .
So as with all the other advice given , it's all down to personal preference and money available , I haven't tried the Nikon 70/200 or seen any results from it , it may well be that this lens would better for what you personally want to shoot , just think about what you want to use the lens for and buy what suits your needs and budget .
Ohh and one more thing, my 18/200 VR and there is no lens creep :D
