My view is Gitzo GT1541T + Markins Q3T. The only tripod you need for the next 10 years if you use lenses below 200mm. So it is a budget tripod and head set if you depreciate over 10 years.
what tripod to buy?

I would suggest not using the Tripodo which comes with the SLR Zoom tripod. Its screw thread is flimsy. The screw broke off after 2 uses of the ball head. Instead i ordered online frm joby.com store fpr their bubble ball head for the slr-zoom.
Wrks fine now.

thanks for the great advise. I thought too this ballhead not solid enough. I will use the Slik ballhead for the time being (from the Slik monopod I bought).
How muych the bubble ball head cost?

Hi guys,
ive been playing with my cam for about a year now and until recently i found the need for a good tripod that can support weight.
I own a 40d with BG-E2N and a 70-200mm f/4 IS. Which tripod and ballhead is recommended for this weight?
sorry im totally clueless about tripods cause there are just too many and the confusing ballheads!

Hello myladypeace, your set up is not exactly considered featherweight either. If you add in a Speedlite flash, then you may need to take the good advice from ManWearPants as stated below...
Good advice for GT1541T & Markins.
Although I didn't think of depreciating it over 10 years. Marvellous way to convince ourselves that it is budget like this. I think this set up can afford to depreciate even longer, 30 years, and thereby giving us a real budget combination!

Bought a Slik 714 CF II Tripod and Slik SBH-320 Ballhead at Cathay for total of $700 SGD last month. Was going to buy a Manfrotto Tripod+Ballhead which alot of newbies like me are using, but my photographer friend(a pro who use one of those giant Gitzo tripod that weights a ton) who went with me suggested I buy something which I will not think of upgrading for another 5 years.
Based on his experience, one would rather spend more and buy something so as to forget about upgrading (for the 'short' time being anyway), then to spend on some cheap tripod+head and to spend additional money later on upgrading.
The one I bought serves me well even though it stretches my budget abit but I don't think I'll even think about upgrading anytime soon.
Just my $0.02
This particular tripod caught my eyes though....hmmmm...maybe if I stike 4D tomorrow ;p

Certainly you can get it from Cathay Photos.
I find their service good. And the sales person is knowledgeable about tripods. Mine was from them. I use the GT1541 which is fantastic and the Kangrinpoche ball head NB3B. Very sturdy, very light. My main purpose was for travelling and this combination served me well.

Yes, I learnt the hard way and ended up spending more.
This traveller titanium special edition is too expensive a tripod, more than $4k, I think. GT1541T is good enough. If got slightly more money can consider the ocean traveller so you can "go up mountain and down the sea"
If Gitzo is really out of your budget at the moment. Just buy the cheapest tripod you can find if you do not have any specific requirements. As long as the tripod legs are more than 1.8kg and cannot close shorter than 45cm, it can't fit into any bags or luggage and makes carrying around very inconvenient. So it does not makes any difference if it is $100 or $500, carbon fibre or steel.

i buy relatively cheap tripods so that i will have the heart to abuse it.
and i don't want to find out if spending more than $300 on a tripod still doesn't prevent it from falling apart with prolonged exposure to saltwater.
Spent $300 on a tripod and it might fall apart. Spent $3000 on a tripod, confirm won't! :bsmilie:
Jokes aside, wherether it's cheap tripod or expensive tripod, the most important thing is to actually use it. I've got a friend who bought expensive gears only to have them sitting on display in his study. Too bad he's a Nikon and I'm a Canon user, else can help him out.:bsmilie:
night86mare uses cheap tripods and is able to shoot outstanding landscape shots while I don't have anything remotely good in my portfolio yet albeit using a relatively more expensive tripod:embrass:
Hi, I got myself the Gitai 3-section tripod + KS-0 ballhead combo from one of the mass sellers in CS. What i really like abt it is the sturdyness and KS-0 ballhead. What i don't like is its folded length is 62cm (a tad too long) and its weight. But I'm a big sized guy and it's ok for me Cost me $170 during their promotional offer.
Oh and well able to support my Sony A300 w/grip, 580 flash and 75-300mm lens.

Got it for USD49.95. So its ard SGD77. Joby sent it by Fed Ex. Got the ball head within 3 working days. Would say the bubble ball head suits the slr-zoom nicely. And has a quick release plate too.
Then again, its the price as its roughly equivalent to another slr-zoom. If the ball head you are currently using is fine, then up to you whether to change or not.
Side note:Its cheaper to order online for the SLR-Zoom and the bubble ball head set from Joby. Only Cost SGD$125 in total.

The shipping was USD20. Like I mention, its more worthwhile getting the set as my colleague who got it as a set from them. His shipping chgs was waived.
Yes, the ball head works well so far, smooth and no creep.
Many times better than the free one which CP gave.

While I agree that the choice of tripod should be based on and sized according to the expected weight of the camera setup it is going to hold plus other functional features, such as net weight, look, ease of deploying/pack-up, etc, I think more margin should also be given to the ball head (if a ball head is the choice). Say if you have a setup of 5 kg and the ball head is rated at 6 kg, we don't know where the 5 kg is placed in the design (this is akin to the SWL of the lifting crane, the further the load on the lifting arm, the lesser the load must be). A battery grip and a large flash gun will bring the CG further and stress the grip on the head. Repeated usage of the ball head may also subject the ball head to further wear and tear. Therefore, I am wondering if one should pick one ball head that is capable of handling at least 50 if not 100% above the expected weight of your setup to factor not only for future growth of your equipment but also aging of your ball head ? Just wondering....
