The problem I think is that the d300 is just not worth the money to me I have tried many settings and just feel that it's noise Level is higher that's just how I feel. Looks like the best pick is either of. The nikons thanks guys. The d70i feel was perfect just that the screen was too small other than that it's fine the d300 on the other hand I felt gave me a bit less pleasure

with the d70 lcd u can't see sh*t, maybe tt's why u can't see any noise with d70s :bsmilie:

it's still a very good camera. but the noise level at 1600 is worse than d300 at iso 3200. conservatively speaking.

get the d90 then. cheaper than d300 and probably just as good, if not better, for most situations (unless sports is your thing, then u really dunno what u are missing ). but be warned. with such a good lcd on the d90, u probably find that the "noise is worse than d70" :bsmilie::bsmilie:

more like a user problem.

there are so many things to set to get the colour/effect:
- kelvin/WB, saturation, sharpness, etc.

Btw i have upgraded to D90 from D60. So u shldnt even be looking at D40 (no logic at all).

Lastly i chose D90 over D300 because of the new technology.
Otherwise D300 51 focus pts is a killer over the D90.
For ISO performance, D90 and D300 are already the best in line for nikon's DX cameras.
If not, pls proceed to full frame.
Btw D3X just launched already... but is $11000+

There is a reason why I suggested D40. He needs only a low MP count. he pixel peeps in terms of image size. So asking him to get a high MP camera is useless as he will complain on the noise again....

thanks guys for all your insights....

we should have a chicken stall somewhere hahahaha

Yea true. But given D70 and D40 having the same pixel count and density, I presume the D40 has better noise control? Since D40 shows less noise.

KFC ;p

d40 is somewhat newer than the d70. while it may be even more entry level than the d70s, it's a newer camera after all. just like d300 vs d90. i like that nikon does not hold out on improvements where it really matters, such as sensor

hi there
i had the d70 which gave good result with great results for the last 3 years.. also curious like the rest as to why the noise level of d300 is not acceptable... did you apply the latest firmware.. there is difference in terms of sharpness
in terms of colours, try various picture controls.. that will help.. and manually adjust the white balance to the enivornment?? if you have capture nx that came long with the camera, you can readjust the settings..
the d300 has many features and sometimes can be quite a handful..

With a more advanced sensor, I guess it should be better. But I don't have both these cameras to prove anything....

I own a D70 and have used a D40 for a couple of days before. I am inclined to say that I think the D40 produces a better image. Less noise and slightly more dynamic range... That's what I think.

I just upgraded to D300 from my D70. I feel D300 is so much superior in terms of everything to D70. I'm really surprised TS don't like it. After playing with D300, I felt my D70 was like a toy camera.

thanks guys i just bought a d90 with a 17-55mm 2.8 and i have no regrets. thanks for your input and suggestions

:bsmilie::bsmilie: No regrets. That's good. No worries, you don't need regrets to spend more. Just a greedy heart and tons of ambitions to take more and better photos.
