This is not flaming.

The above are merely responses to a totally unqualified statement.

People are just so quick to dismiss Oly and Four-Thirds.

I like the colors and the optical quality of the Oly lenses. The Oly lenses seem very well balanced in terms of sharpness, contrast, colors, etc. Compare this with another lens which may prefer ceter sharpness over edge.

Another question. Why did the started put this thread here and in the General, Reviews, Tech Talk sections and not in Nikon, Canon and all the other threads??

Because his decision is leaning towards Olympus? Most likely that is why he chose this place to ask questions... and moreover, with Leica and Olympus, you are choosing a system (4/3) with the best lenses available for the prosumer/professional market. And this is going to get better!

I think by choosing Olympus, you are also choosing the 4/3 system which opens up the choices for products from multiple companies (I am sure this is a bonus for those who have been on the Olympus platform for years). And next year will be even more exciting with Olympus, Panasonic and Leica all releasing new products! Not to mention Sigma's commitment to bringing all their lenses with 4/3 mounts.

In this aspect, the system will offer multiple lens choices and accessories and bodies.

Yes, indeed Im leaning towards Olympus... I have taken pics with my friend's olympus compact camera not long ago and was deeply impressed with its sharpness, colours and very well focus. It was just a mju, if it is a dSLR i believe i will fall in love with Olympus immediately :bsmilie: Still cant make my mind to take olympus cause the distraction of EOS 400D ;p

Haha, why don't we fellas meet and let i2wire try out the full range.

Then watch him fall after that. :bsmilie:

hey, i have d E500 that u r look at....here got so many lens that u can try...u r lucky..i dun have many just kits + a 35mm macro..:(

Olympus is a new comer in the AF SLR market. As I mention they are out of business in the AF film era. Yes, the Zuiko lens are nice with a huge price tag but nothing special and their MTF chart are not that impressive even below some Nikon or Canon lens. They are japanese lens similar to Canon, Nikon etc and all their raw glasses are from the same source. You see I am not trying to compare Oly with full-frame here. Even the Nikon D50 with a APS size sensor has better performane with a DIGITAL LENS so why should we opt for a smaller sensor instead? We have heard about Third party lens coming for oly but how long was the wait? Third party lens had alredy be sold now for Sony Alpha that was released much later then the Oly. A lot of people predict that the 4/3 system will be gone by in few years time. :nono:

Even with the best lens made for oly, the lens will not exhibit its full potential resolution due to the oly punny sensor size...

Then again, look at how the sensors are constructed though. Puny? Not really. The way the sensor catches light varies a little from the other sensors found on Canon and Nikon. Then again, I would rather have a lens made for a system knowing that as sensors improve, I can shoot better images than a camera system which make only mediocre lenses with "bells and whistles" and the images speak for themselves.

Sorry if I sound defensive here. But really, glass is all that matters at the end of the day. Sensor technology is constantly improving. My lenses are keepers while bodies are changed with every new release. That is what I meant.

Sometimes I don't understand why there are people who like to quote sources, talk a lot about technical specifications and compare between brands. Now, I am an amateur, to me big sensor, small sensor does not matter. What matter to me most is whether the camera+photographer combination can come out with nice pictures or not.:)

The camera is a dead object but the person holding it is alive. You may have the best set of equipment, but if your photography skills sucks, whats the use then?

Come on, this is a photography forum, let your pictures do the talking. For me, I have seen great pictures produced using 4/3 cameras by Tomcat, Hacker etc. just to name a few. Similarly I am not doubting the other systems because I have seen equally good pictures produced with them.

So if anyone wants to doubt the 4/3 system, post your pics. Talk no use, NPNT:bsmilie:

I also volunteer, but you must promise to bring 7-14mm for us to play with.
:cheergal:

you fast fast want to play with all my lenses liao ah? :bsmilie:

Guys, wat's so special with ED lens?

:bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie: u juz made my day!!
man = human
woman = human
therefore man = woman
best one of the year!

it really show how much u know about lens & sensor tech. :bsmilie:

Olympus is a new comer in the AF SLR market.

How many years do you have to be doing it until you aren't considered new anymore...isn't six years enough now not to be considered a newcomer to digital SLRs...not to mention the IS AF SLRs; I didn't use Olympus before the C-700, so I can't say when they first made an AF SLR.

Guys, wat's so special with ED lens?

From the online lens FAQ, http://www.faqs.org/faqs/rec-photo/lenses/faq/

Q30. What is "low dispersion glass".

A. Low dispersion glass is specially formulated to have a small
variation of index of refraction with wavelength. This makes it
easier for the designer to reduce chromatic aberration and lateral
color. This kind of glass is most often used in long lenses.
Marketing designators such as ED and SLD hint at the use of
low-dispersion glass.

Thanks,Mike!! :)

Sorry if I sound defensive here. But really, glass is all that matters at the end of the day. Sensor technology is constantly improving. My lenses are keepers while bodies are changed with every new release. That is what I meant.

A system as a whole is what REALLY matters. I used to use Pentax, even still have my Pentax glass. When I went dSLR shopping I didn't care much for Pentax's digital offerings, so rather than limiting myself to my past purchases, I looked for entirely new system that suited my needs more.

And I would have done the same thing if I previously owned a Nikon or Canon system...sure you eat a bit on buying new lenses, but why limit your choices just because you used it in the past?

I'm the same way with computers...last time I bought new I looked at Macs to see what they offered compared to my current PC...yes it would have meant buying new programs to replace my PC programs, but I wanted to see if the Mac could fill my needs better than a Windows PC. In that situation I felt there was little difference for my needs so I got another XP computer. Taking your point of previous investments would sound like this, "I got all this money already invested in software, so I shouldn't bother looking to see if there's a better solution out there for me."

Next time I have to buy a new camera, again I'll look to see what other companies are offering. Last time I went shopping I had my eye on a Sigma Foveon camera, but Oly's dust reduction won out!
