What other lens?

Hi

I have a Canon 300D (yes it is old) house in a S&S. Have two strobes but only one len (Canon 60mm Macro).

Amy thinking of getting more lens to use underwater. Any suggestions or what other lens should I be getting? Was thinking of a wide angle lens (ie Sigma 10-20mm or 12-24mm). Your guidance is much appreciated.

Cheers

Don't get a wide, get a fisheye :p

I don't have a U/W Setup for my DSLR...... but why Fisheye instead of Ultra-Wide ??

Won't Ultra-Wide be more flexible then Fisheye  ?? Thxs for any info.

a wide is not as wide as a fisheye. a 15mm fisheye is wider than a 12mm rectilinear lens

i'm thinking of trading in my tokina 12-24 for a tokina 10-17 or a canon 15/2.8 fisheye

Thanks for your guidance.

Antacid - May I ask why a fisheye? I have thought about it but just not sure how often I will be using it when out of the water. The Tokina 10-17mm is definitely an alternative. Personally, I am not use to the look of a fisheye photo.

Yes..... Fisheye is really really wide (almost 180 deg depending on camera) but won't a diver lost the ability for taking 'normal' animals photos ??

I've seen wide 'land/coral scape' photos from dive mag...... and I know how good it looks. But fisheye would always produces photos with a slightly curve/rounded corner. Therefore my question is - Won't an Ultra-Wide (10-XXmm).... be more flexible in use than a Fisheye.

Thxs for any explanation :D

From my limited use and experience with my zuiko 8 mm FE underwater. It's as you guys have said, not as flexible as a wide zoom. But then for capturing big stuff like mantas or big schools or fish or close focus wide angle stuff nothing can beat a fish eye bah...
You won't believe how big i can make a tiny sea fan look with a FE lens, haha... :bsmilie:

As for flexibility, forget about medium sized fish. i was trying to shoot a CFWA shot of a lionfish in bangka, my 8" dome was literally touching the fish when i filled up the frame.

Fisheye lens uw will not produce (undesirable) distortion as on land; the uw world thru the lens is different. Good lens but not ezy to use, particularly with strobes. You will need to position the strobes out of the lens coverage to avoid hot spot. This will require some trials and errors but do note that long arms is not necessary be the answer (I have made that mistake).

My set up on D300 are 10.5mm Fisheye, 20mm WA, 60mm micro and 105mm micro. I have been told that 20mm is not good on digital due the the multiplication effect but my last weeked trip proved otherwise.

If you are OK using zoom, i guess the 12-22 or similar would be a good start.

Hahaha..... GOOD ONE !! :thumbsup::sweatsm::lovegrin:

Wonder if they'll ever design a mantis shrimp eye lens, hahaha... that'll be interesting. :bsmilie: Read about their eyes not only being much more sensitive but they can see in hues and colours we can only dream about.
