What Made you choose the Panasonic GF1 or Olympus Pen?

I chose the GF1, primarily

1. It is made in Japan
2. It has a built in flash. remeber the m/3 system is about lighter weight and portability. A built in flash is always useful rather then lugging an exterhal flash along...
3. Slow slow autofocus....if the Pen is a toyota, the Gf1 would be a BMW. A faster autofocus will allow you the capture those fleeting moments,

Hmmm....
your first point is interesting to me,2nd point I shall not comment cause I've commented somewhere else before, third point I've also comment before ;)

I slowly learn to accept MIC stuffs, used to insist on MIJ. Nowadays we don't have much choice, as long as it's not China brand, I accept. Build quality on EP-2, nothing to complain at all, very refined.

I can accept MIC but not China cars.

haha,no comments on the car since I can't drive yet XD,but actually,China made products I find are getting better, quite durable lol

Made in Japan is definitely superior lah...

You are paying more than s$1K+++ for a electronic equipment, if there is a made in Japan and a made in China equivalent, which will you choose ?

I have been a Canon DSLR user, and the autofocusing speed is pretty fast....I tried the Pen2...the autocfocus speed is just plain sluggish. I could not focus at a full moon, unlike the GF1 and the GF1 autofocus was pretty good, almost as fast as Canon.

Don't get me wrong, I also used to own a Olympus SLR before....but switch to Canon because I find Canon autofocus much superior ( my personal opinion)

BTW, Canon also do not have built in body stabilisation, just like Panny. Its all in th lens.

If there's an option I'll choose MIJ, I believe their QC is better since Jap are known to be more committed to their work. Now between this 2 camera, I got to throw away this factor else I got no choice. Nowadays almost all my electronics are MIC and they are still as durable and many are of good quality (depends on brand and model).

AF and camera performance has nothing to do with place of manufacture.

I beg to differ....as you have mentioned...QC is definitely better in Made in Japan products.

Its true that most things are made in china nowadays....but if there is a made in Japan equivalent, I will jump for it....who will not?

I dun mind made in china stuffs for the lower end products like rice cookers, toasters e.t.c but for higher end Expensive elecronic products that incorporated delicate and sensitive parts, i go for made in Japan, whenever I can get them.

THis in only one of the reason why i chose GF1 over Pen2.

As I have said, the other is the sluggish AF and lack of built in flash. Having been used to the speed and accuracy of Canon's autofocuing, the Pen2's autofocus was a letdown for me.

And having no built in flash means I would have to carry around a external flash for even simple situations like fill-in. and that's extra load and inconvenience.

ANyays, all these are just my personal prferences and opinions.

I totally agree with stetan. 1 of the reasons why i chose GF1 over Pen 1/2, is the country of made. I wont fork out $$ for such high end / mid range cameras and yet compromising the quality of the products.

this applied to me when i bought a japanese made car recently. i believe quality comes at a price, of cos at the reasonable price.

GF1 has quick autofocus and built-in flash which are very impt features. GF1 becomes irresistible with 20mm pancake lens. It is a WOW factor for me. My views.

GF-1 is more like an LX-3 gone bigger. It's nice but lacks several things that a serious hobbyist wants/needs. It's optional EVF is basically crap. Doesnt have in body stabilization yet not all their m3/4 lenses have it. Ya it has flash but like i said a serious hobbyist would probably whip out a small portable flash. Camera wise the EP-2 is better. It's only when you throw in the 20mm f1.7 panasonic G lens that the GF-1 catches up somewhat. Weighing against the Pen EP-2 is it's price and GUI.

From a design standpoint I prefer the EP-2 - and Oly glass is usually pretty good and RELIABLE! That to me is important. I like the EP-2 for it's design too.

Adrer sales service is also better with Oly.

 well said

Also the EP-2's classic design

aiyoo different ppl different needs. Some go for design, some go for Image Quality, some go for lens quality, some go for features....

For cars I'll try not get China/Thai/Msia, China cars are the worst. The refinement and built quality differs a lot, very obvious, will spend a few k more to get a Jap car.

But getting a EP1/2 does not compromise on quality, I can't find flaws in the built. Unlike my MIC Fuji F200exr, which build quality is really very poor compared to a MIJ F11.

I believe what I see and not what I perceived it to be.

After much thoughts, I get the EP-2. The thing that make me consider is the built-in flash, really a big +ve for me. Some shoots does require fill-in flash and it's an extra step to mount a flash on EP-1/2.

I dun doubt that built-quality is good for pen2. But as you said, these are only the things that you can see from the exterior.....

how about those that you can't, the internal electronics?....for that, we will have to depend on the QC process.

A made in Japan high end camera is a great plus here in assurance.

That's true, we won't know the internal parts QC. Time will tell if pen can last, at least right now the exterior give some assurance on the effort put in.

My opinion is that olympus spend money and effort to build a new platform, taking a big risk, I believe they won't allow it to screw up due to poor QC which can be controlled. Impact will be huge on both m4/3 platforms and the brand.

C'mon man, please don't say that Canon is superior camera. You just got me laughing over that. I beg to differ. On a side note, i use Canon myself.

Like that, you should not drive a Made in Japan car. Drive those continental cars. Don't live in a Made in Singapore house. Get a bunch of European architects to build your house for you....

C'mon, do you think the Japanese are sitting there exclusively to build your products for you. Look inside the camera. Most of the parts still come from CHINA!!

I have a honda, and i always thought Volkswagon was more worth the 80+K i spent on my honda....:bsmilie:

Bodies can be made any where. To me, the brand name, the quality remains. Made in Japan does not mean it will work perfect. Neither made in China means it's lousy. Apple ipods and computers are assembled in China? But why do people still buy them? Simple Apple has a very high QC. Do you get squeaky parts on a apple computer. No. I have squeaky parts on my acer laptop. Also made in china. What do we have to say then?

EP2 has a built in flash?????

EP2 has a built in flash?????

Maybe I phrase wrongly, when I'm selecting between the 2, I consider the flash part, if got build in flash is a big + point, for EP1/2 need extra step to mount external flash.

ANything wrong in saying that Canon autofocus is much more superior than Pen2 ?

Why should you be laughing? You think the Pen2 is superior to Canon DSLR in autofocsing ?

You just got me laughing over that

I think this tread is getting hot already and some flames starting to flare.
Cool down guys.

1. there are people who consider image (design) is the most important when buying stuff
2. there are people who consider image quality is the most important when buying stuff (never mind not ergonomic etc)
3. there are people who consider price is the most important when buying stuff (cheapest and most popular so can find stuff at 2nd hand market or hoping to borrow from friends)
4. there are people who consider functionality is most important (the more the better, throw in mp3 player, tetris game also good)
5. there are people who like pink whatever
6. ...

Just like girls some like big top, big bottom, hour glass, skinny, leggy, cute, sexy, mature, look like hello kitty, etc ... OK I should stop here before kana infraction LOL
it is natural to like different things
it is good to like different things

imagine if all like GF1, how much more difficult will that be to get?
imagine if all like EP1 or EP2, how much more difficult will that be to get?
