Do you guys need to use a tripod with range 300-400mm?

When we discuss abt 300-400 minimum and 500mm optimum range, is this in APS-C scale or FF?

Those should be the lenses focal range, u multiply 1.5x for APS-C cam if FF lenses.

A tripod and external flash is good to bring along,a must for me, give u more flexibility to different lighting conditions.

Get at least 300mm for APS-C camera...:)

My question was:
When we say 300-400mm or 500mm is good for Zoo, is that when used with APS-C i.e. effective 450-600, 750mm or when used with FF which is exactly the same as stated focal range.

So if I can rephrease the question:
If I use FF, is 400mm good enough? Or I need to use my APS-C to give me that extra 50% range?

Maybe take ur two camera with u, both aps-c and ff. and test out. :)

That's not the idea... Those who mentioned 300, 400, 500 should be adequate should know the answer already :)

I have not been to zoo for quite sometime. However, my last trip, I remember there is quite a distance away when I looked at the animal. I believe, most of the time > 4meters. Especially the area where the tiger lives. I could be wrong, since it was really quite sometime ago (I think > 10 years) since my last visit.

So, if I am to make visit today, and the trip would last a whole day and involve walking around the whole place, a heavy lens would not make in the list of lenses I would bring along. 500mmF8 is quite light, for a 500mm prime. In fact, I don't think there would be problem for me to hang it around my neck for the whole day. This is assume, only go there to take pictures of animals. If I going in a group, the other lens I may bring along is the kit lens for group photo or something closer to take (activities of the group). However, I may even bring along my Sony T2, so no need to switch lenses.

Being sometimes not in Zoo visiting. If my memories are correct the tiger enclosure should be even further may be 16meter away or more for safety reason. I would bring along 70-400mmG for the shooting and also 50mm f1.4 for close up.:sweatsm:

Of course you get slightly better reach with an APS-C body.

I only use my a700 to shoot the tigers/lions exihibit. Using 400mm prime lens my tigers shots a very tight - the tiger filling almost the entire frame. Putting a 2x TC leaves me with a tight shot of face.

I never bother about the technicalities of the 1.5x crop factor. I just switch to the 500mm if I feel not enough or add TC or change to something less if too long.

Just bring both and trylah, not many people have that luxury to have both FF and APS-C body. I dont mind lugging around 10kg of gear to get what i want. Bring along a 800mm lens with your FF body also can but leaves you with not many animals to shoot.

I think you try both and tell us, we've contributed, now your turn.

wow, the heavy weight will slow you down... I always bring 1 or 2 lens only for light travel at zoo. But all these do not really matter maybe you are bigger size and strong. The only stupid thing is those days I went always rain! but my tactics saved the days ;)
