What Lens for Beginner?

borrow from your teacher first to play with it; 17-85mm is a gd lens for 1.6x sensor. The range can do portraits and landscape. For low light conditions, you need a flash. Outdoors is definitely no problem, add a hood will be gd. =)

Perhaps you could use Av mode first. I shoot mostly in Av (beginner too). Set the aperture size that you want, and let the camera decide how long to open the aperture.

aperture dun go by timing one, tt would be the shutter. =\

If you're going to spend that amount, I would actually go for a 17-50 f/2.8. While you don't have IS, and you lose 35mm reach on the long end, the f/2.8 is a very nice thing to start out with, more so than the f/4-5.6 from the 17-85.

Yeap, or this, but it really depends on whether you can live with the 24mm wide end as opposed to a 17mm wide end. I've found under some circumstances that I need that extra wideness, when using my 24-85. Perhaps for TS, getting a 17-50 would be a better option as the wide end will come in useful in doing some landscape; the 17-50 can also focus closer for close-up work.

I've decided on what things i'll most likely be shooting.

I'll get the kit lens tonight (most prob).

Then i'll save up, till prob next year. wait get angbow. then go for a much better lens. furthest range i'll get is around 150mm.

Will not be getting those 300mm 400mm as i've decided that even if i shoot sports. It's for the school and i most prob wont have that much time to go down to take pictures. probably when i get older and find more interest in sports.

Current interest : Macro, Portraits.

Good choice for the kit lens.

Next Year, u can choose 24-85mm which is a gd lens and can be used on FF body when u upgrade in future. =)

Other choices include 28-135mm and 17-85mm.

If you can get fat ang bao, i can recommend some more options. ``

Why consider so long? Get the 70-200F4 IS today, then the 135L tomorrow. Best part is you know what you want already!
Mass orgy u need wide angle and macro - Tokina 11-16 F2.8 and 35 F2.8 :thumbsup: for fast UWA and the macro!! :thumbsup:

I'm saving for the 135L with 1.4x TC, it costs similar to the 70-200 F2.8 and lighter.

70-200 f/4 is better, more versatile in those situations. =)
