What Lens for Beginner?

Started off with my 400D 3 months back. Got 2 beginner lens to let go if ur interested 
1. Canon 28-105 f/3.6-5.6 USM -> S$220
2. Tamron 28-200 f/3.8-5.6 -> S$180
Like you, was looking for budget lens to explore my preference. finally found the style i like, therefore intend to invest in some of the lenses the others mentioned above.

are you too close to the subject? every lens have a different MFD (mini. focusing distance)

What were you trying to shoot? If you were doing some macro stuff then I would guess it's the MFD like filterfunk suggested.
No a filter will not help. What you are experiencing is MFD (minimum focusing distance), as what FilterFunk has mentioned. There is a minimum distance that every lens can focus to. Any lesser, and the lens will not be able to acquire focus. I think you have been trying to shoot nearer than the MFD of the 50mm, which is 0.45m.
Even your eyes have MFD. Try putting your fingertip really close to your eye. It won't appear sharp. You have to move away a couple of millimeters.

move further away from the beetle. Too get real close to the beetle, u need a macro lens.

either that or the thing u were focusing on was low contrast. white wall small beetle wrong af pt ....
Perhaps you could use Av mode first. I shoot mostly in Av (beginner too). Set the aperture size that you want, and let the camera decide how long to open the aperture.

M mode needs more control and practice. Sometimes i use that mode for shooting still life subjects.

My friend, exposure is based on three components, and they are not aperture, ISO and aperture speed :bsmilie:. (D'oh!)
It's how long the shutter stays open, not the aperture. Exposure is actually based on Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO. There is no such thing as how long to open the aperture, that will affect your exposure.
The learning curve for M-mode is definitely easier now when compared to the film days. Gone were the days where you had to wait a day or two before you could review your exposures. Go out and shoot more and you will get the hang of it sooner or later.

As you see i am currently using 50mm f1.8 on my 400D. which is around 80mm. i find it comfortable to take pictures just that i need a slightly shorter range. Hence i think i wont be shooting landscape all the time, mayb once in a while, so i've decided not to get the kit lens ( 18-55).
Thinking of getting either 28-105 or 28-135. What i shoot most is, Macro and close-up. Portraits, and mayb sports when there is competition in school.
What do you guys think? Any better recommendations or advice. Pls share

Honestly I think you should still get the kit lens. You never know when you'll need the 18mm. You won't know what you're missing till you use it.
My bad! meant shutter when i said aperture the second time... :sticktong

Play with a 18-55mm first. Instead of 28-105mm and 28-85mm, i would prefer 24-85mm in consideration with 1.6x sensor and the image quality is gd when u get a gd copy. =)
