wahh u guys are great.. i get so much info here... now even tempted to get 35/2 or 35/1.2....
BTW.. 85/1.2 is it consider good choice too in this kind condition... I know the price is steep.. but.. lots of review said that this lense are amazingg

It's good, but if you're just casually out with friends around a café table, and you're using a 1.6x crop camera, chances are with the 85mm, you're just going to get a close-up of a pair of eyes and maybe a nose in the frame.

24mm - Canon 24f1.4L

28mm - Leica R 28mmF2.8

35mm - Zeiss 35f1.4 and 35F1.4L

50mm - Leica 50f1.4, the 50F1.2L is crap, have one only for collecting dust.

60mm - Zeiss planar makro 60F2.8

85mm - 85F1.2L

135mm - 135F2L

frankly, f2.8 is hardly considered a low light aperture unless you mean 300/400f2.8...

cafe-table 1.6x crop shots need a 35mm or wider. otherwise it's a tight headshot.

135F2....period. Though I had 85F1.2II. 135F2 give you enough distance so that people do not notice you when you take the shot. AF is fast fast fast.....

period? what about suitability of focal length?

but i guess to each his own.

From experience, anything shorter....people will notice you when you are shooting them(you are going to be quite close to them). Anything longer eg. 200mm 300mm you have to be further away which risk other people coming between you and the subject and miss the moment.

I use to use 70-200 F2.8....this lens catch too much attention and seldom you get good candid shots because people othen look at you when you shoot them. A prime with smaller foot print reduce the chances of people detecting you.

Go try out snd see. I have tried 16-35 (way too wide), 24-105 (a bit short and not bright enough), 85F1.2 (too short and AF not that fast), 135F2(Bright and fast AF), 70-200F2.8(lens too big), 300F4(lens too big) anything above 300/400 F2.8 is way too big....

I wonder how you get a real candid when you are like one table away only. People will definitely notice you when you are going to shoot them. For 85mm at 1-2 meters away, you can get head and shoulder shots not that bad, but my question will be at that distance won't the subject notice you and destroy your "Candid" moment?

I am taking the TS' context of candids being candids of friends shot when hanging out (read first post). I think you have quite differently defined your form of candids, which is not wrong, but just not the same as what TS is referring to, I believe.

Okay my bad did not read TS first message carefully. :sweatsm: Being so close to the subject, I think a PnS will be better then DSLR. Will you not notice someone shooting you with a DSLR on the same table?

My friends are quite used to me. Hehe. Somemore I only either use a 35mm or 50mm, both of which are so small. Won't feel intimidated one.

canon had a 50/1.0L and a 50/0.95 lens. discontinued already.
