What is your answer?

you weren't there when the other distris were doing the job. what's the point of maybe-ing?

and there are many ways to reply without being self-deprecating. one of the best way is to friggin ignore them if they are just snobbish ignoramus

What is wrong with me "maybe-ing"? We were talking about the "low volume, high price" tactics of the previous agent right? If that's what you more senior users are saying about your experience with the previous agents. i haven't disputed it one iota, have i?

What i am saying is that a current or future agent of Pentax in Singapore cannot employ that tactic anymore and be successful.

So what does it matter if i'm not there when the previous agents were in charge? Due to my lack of experience with them i lack credibility in speculating as such? Surely you can't be suggesting that.

What is your objection to me being 'self-deprecating' anyway? How is that not an acceptable response? I never criticised non self-deprecating responses, did i? So why do you take so much objection with mine?

I suggested (and quite tongue-in-cheek) that it would be a good answer to Canikon "snobs" as you call them. I never objected or said the other responses were not recommended or less appropriate.

You know, not all of us, me as a noobie user included, have macro blogs to point to and say "let's let our pictures do the talking". We might not get as good as you. We may want to get as good as you. But in the meantime, we do not have "picture-proof" of how good Pentax is in our own arsenal of photos. So why can't you just allow some us to suggest being self-depracating and disarming with our responses as an alternative?

Alright... will do... taking chill pill...

camera is just a piece of equipment. lets not waste time typing in the forum and start shooting aggressively. okie. chillz.

GsiGuy,

First of all, let me clarify that I do not claim to know everything there is to know about photography or the industry. I shoot often and enjoy the process tremendously, but like many here, I'm new and learning.

My blog and my posts allows me to share and to learn from pple.

I object to "maybe-ing" because we weren't there and we have no idea if the lack of success of the previous agents were due to, as you say, "low volume, high price tactics", or something else.

Based on my conversations with more experienced users, this is not the case. Its much simpler than that - its pure bochup attitude because they have other priorities and they did not give pentax the support it needed to succeed. This led to poor availability, uncompetitive prices and a host of other frustrations for the local user community.

I support pentax and thoroughly enjoy using their current DSLR models. But am I under any illusions that the brand is the absolute best and destined for greatness?

Of course not. The brand has some shortcomings and is not able to compete on an even footing with the other dominant brands in every market segment. Some of this is due to choice and business strategy / positioning. Some of this is due to intrinsic barriers to entry due to their current position as a market underdog.

I believe that these shortcomings can be addressed if we continue to give the brand our support, and if they continue to gain market share and prove themselves to be a viable revenue stream to their parent company.

I'm ultimately a realist that believes that Pentax exist not because it makes us feel good, but because it's making $$$.

As for being self-deprecating, i disagree with that because it is just not necessary. You are discovering the joys of photography through pentax and that is reason enough to choose the brand - because it meets your needs and you get the results you want from it. even if you do not show pple your pictures, are you unhappy with the ones in your HDD? so why the inferiority complex?

And what makes you think that I'm able to dis-arm all skepticism with my blog? My pictures aren't the best. I have problems with my setup that i'm still figuring out and any C and N user can just pop in and say that i can't achieve certain things because i'm not using C and N and that's true too. so what?

Ultimately, I didn't buy a camera to make myself feel good abt the brand. I bought a camera to take nice pictures *period*

I also do the same thing :bsmilie:

Sometimes I show them Thomas Shahan's flickr

Dear fellow pentaxians...perhaps the best answer is;
"Shuddup and shoot your picture la......."
After all, it is the photos that are more intriguing.

TRUE weather sealed is enough to kick ass, let alone the in-body IS. Note; my hobby takes me to water so it is a no brainer.

Well we agree on something then. That's all i am going to say anymore about the subject on the prompting of other forumers. I'll keep my comments to myself. Feel free to PM me if you feel otherwise. I hope we can just agree to disagree.

Anyway, your blog is great. It shows much dedication and application of the photographic arts and i enjoy your photos very much.

JinG14 perhaps makes much more sense than you and i. So this is the end of what i have to say on the subject, under the advise of cooler heads.

Totally agree with this, but the frustrating part is times when we're forced to face ignorance of others with the annoying smile on their faces which will be best treated by concentrated HCl.

One of the factors which I always bring up is that the local Pentax community is remarkably tight knit, friendly and helpful.

The community is also very enthusiast in nature, with a correspondingly high level of skill.

Usually other people won't notice me .... until they here me snapping in long continuous mode... zup..zup..zup..zup..zup..zup..zup .... ohhh.... the sweet sound of snapshots. then they will ask to look at the pics but most of them will give positive criticism afterwards.

You aren't going to be able to control everyone else - that's a fact of life.

You can try educating them once, if they don't listen - after that, just don't bother. Cheers.

I thought machine-gunning is not good?

cheers. didn't intend to offend. if any of my posts affected you negatively, let me know, i'll delete the offending part and extend my apologies.

and my shots are very basic macro and close-ups that can be achieved with very basic understanding and equipment. nothing to shout about. swing by OTC's flikr if u have time :)

my basic premise is that because i despise brand snobbery, i do not want a fellow pentaxian to have to swallow that indignity by having to be self-deprecating.

on the other hand, we should also watch ourselves, lest we become what we despise :bsmilie: fanboys

This thread has created so much interest about branding and we royalists protecting our rights. I believe it all point to which age group we belong.
Canikons in my age group tends to respect my choice as the brand is synonymous to photography during the film era.
We should not be overly concern just a few chaps think their choice is wiser. I rather remain the niche then be a commoner.:)

i was surprize to see this thread generate so much interest too. :)
with the BOOMZ of DSLR and the BOOMZ of rich young kids, i guess my encounter is unavoidable.

marketing i always believe do a big part. i do not wish pentax to do more marketing, but at the same time, i do wish people know about the pros of owning a pentax!!
