The Manfrotto Monopod head, 234RC (dunno whether it's still in production... seems like a lot of Manfrotto items are discontinued) costs around $35.
can't find the pic on manfrotto website, how it looks like? how much is a ball head cost?

I was quoted $15 for the 234, not sure about the RC version.

Most of the cheaper Manfrotto ballheads are about $65-72(168,308RC,352RC)

For me, I can think of 2 situations where the monopod could be useful.

1. When space is contraint, eg. so crowded that it's advisable not to deploy the tripod.
2. Doing panning photography?

how bout 3. Stage/concert photography, u need to move about and u can't have time to set up ur tripod.
