Is there a huge difference between the 18-55mm IS vs 18-55mm non-IS II?

Not much, apart from IS and where it was made in.

Not true. They are worlds apart in the image quality department. If you've used the old 18-55 II, and now use the 18-55 IS, you'll notice a marked improvement in resolving power with the IS lens.

Canon redesigned the optics completely for the IS version, so there IS a huge difference (pardon the pun) with the IS version.

Curious.. did any online review did a compare on the IS & Non-IS version?

Hi, I do own this lens too and I find that the pics churn out by this lens is pretty sharp. I would definitely recommend this lens especially for beginners who has just started off with photography.:bsmilie:

SOrry and peisei, what is the meaning of "stop down"?

It basically means using a smaller aperture. Most lenses, when using smaller apertures, produce decent images.

Not sure what crack you are smoking but I am sure it is sharper even than ur 24-105 on a crop body.

The resolving power of the 18-55 IS is insane for that price.

I own both lenses, and pixel-peeping my 24-105 is sharper. But the 18-55 holds its own and, yes, it is insane at that price point. I'm not sure why people keep knocking it :(

It's usually 'cause they don't quite know what they have on their hands. Haha.

Try 24mm F4, during my previous test using my friend body, 18-55 is sharper, but flare control got problem.

Besides flare, the barrel distortion at the wide-end is worse, but that really isn't comparing apples to apples any more :) Either way, the 18-55 is a great lens for the price, and I wish people would appreciate it more instead of dumping it or thinking it is inferior and "need" to get an L to "improve the pictures".

For those who can read Chinese, here's a link to a friend's blog on how he found the the 18-55 on his 10D (modified to mount of course :)):

Quite rugged too.. I dropped it and its still working fine.. Except when i shake the lens i hear something shaking inside, especially when switch is on MF mode. Tested the focusing, checked the apperture, checked the smoothness of the zoom ring seems ok. Havent test the Image Stabilizer yet though.

this lens ok what... it is especially if you are a frequent traveler, this lens will save you alot of space and weight.

regarding the IQ of it, i think it's not too bad. it produces sharp pics when stopped down to f4. the only draw back is the build quality and the f3.5 wide open, will not survive hand held in low light conditions w/o flash.

however for the price, it's excellent! just like 50mm f1.8.

yes, this is truly a nice lens for its price. look at my sample birding..:bsmilie:
