Thinking of getting the HF11 but my current laptop is not equip to handle the files from the videocam. Thinking of getting a new PC (or laptop if not too expensive) that has the minimum specs to handle 24mbps video clips.

Any advice? Thanks in advance.

My Quad Core can edit AVCHD files, but the frame rate is very low and it's not really workable for anything except basic trimming of short projects. Anything beyond that, I convert to an intermediary codec, usually Canopus HQ. This takes up a lot of hard disk space but the editing experience is much much smoother.

depends a lot on your budget..

easiest thing to do would be to encode to either mp4 h264, wmvhd, divx, qt and then edit from there unless using specialized softwares with their own editing format. You lose some of the quality depending on the compression but makes the files more manageable on older machines.

I had to overclock my desktop up to 3.6Ghz from 1.8Ghz for bearable encoding and rendering times but definitely a huge improvement to previous "leave overnight" method.

Thanks. I have been thinking of getting a new PC so now seem to be right time with a new videocam. Thing is I am a total newbie when it comes to videophotography and editing (obviously). Probably not getting into the complicated stuff. Just simple managing of files/editing at this stage.

Likely to ask a friend to help fix up a PC. Just wondering what is the minimal specs without overkill. Budget-wise around 3k. Possible?
