what got you into photography ?

I was drinking and smoking too much so I figured that if I didn't have a hobby I'd die young. So I took up photography as a diversion from my vices.

Now I cut down on booze and smoking but my fear of dying young is still there............ from starvation because I spent all my money on lens, accessories, etc. No difference, yeah? :D

make the most of what you have. and you will not have any problems.

I was using a film PnS for taking pictures of my kids ions away. And when digital PnS became affordable I got a Canon A40. For shooting kids it's ok but bad for shooting my fishes. Then got a Fuji prosumer, better, but still not good enough for my fishes. Finally got a 2nd hand 20D.
Now it's 7D, kids all grown up liao, but still shooting my fishes...........:sweatsm:

Sounds more like an underwater camera will suite u best... ;p

My great Papa :D

It started with few film cameras like Yashica, Oly

Then an Oly PnS, my first digital and it was different... you need to be more steady... not like the films, you can move your hand immediately after pressing the shutter.

Then the Sony P100 (still going steady), a great companion.

Then a Nikon Coolpix L3 that I purchased in an impulse buy as there was great discount ... ohh so slow and annoying... killed Nikon brand for me.

Then a fujifilm S9500 .... a great camera, which fueled me to go to DSLR

Finally a 40D... probably the first batch.. I was thinking of buying a 30D knowing clearly that 40D was around the corner. 40D came and the difference between 30D and 40D was a great value for money .. so I pre-ordered in Amazon and then the history started :D

So far no looking back and probably I will one day upgrade to a 1Ds ;p

Was interested in photography way back in jc days and even joined the photography club hoping to learn more about the techniques and all but sadly, the club was not very active and i did not even get to use their cameras, mostly the seniors were the ones who took pictures of any events. Newbies like us don't get much opprtunities... Also could not afford one in those days but now it is a different story (currently own an Oly E420). i'm also a very visual person, loved the visual arts so naturally i would also be drawn to photography as it is one of those mediums that can capture priceless and unforgettable moments. :)

To impress XMMs ... LOL!

Needed a distraction from everyday mundane things, so decided on this as a hobby, to revisit my old hobby.

Some how your situation is quite similar to mine.

I started serious photography with a SLR (a bit rusty with the skills already), it has since been hibernating in a dry box (well, I'm planning a cabinet soon), since then I've survived on PnS. Until recently that is, when I was shooting my boy's 4x100m relay during his sports day... Digital zoom across that field was super horrid! That was when I've decided that it's time to go DSLR... I have thought about selling my F70 SLR, but recently I've decided that it maybe wiser to keep it - if one day I'd go back to film photography and explore what only FF DSLR can do these days... :bsmilie:

yup now it applies to my 5yrs old son, and the twins coming this sep.

i just like taking pictures & being in the picture.:bsmilie:

Theres only one reason why I took up photography. And that is money.

I am desperate for money and I need more money. $$$.

But photography has really burn holes in my pockets and piggy banks!! How?

i started to like DSLR when I compared my wedding photo with my pns photo..... realized.. my wedding photo looks GREAT!, so dont want to waste my time in PnS anymore

Another hobby, but good one. Shooting cats has never been so satisfying before...:bsmilie:

Interesting thread to see how everyone got started. Let me share my two cents worth.

I started off with my cameraphone back in JC/NS days, taking lots of random pictures of almost everything. I just loved capturing moments and also looking out for interesting lines that made for an interesting frame. I was lucky enough to get a D40X for a birthday present which propelled me into photography.

I was clueless then, but spent hours on flickr at night, browsing photos and looking at the exif data to learn more. I joined this group for D40/D40X (which has since expanded to include all Nikon entry level cameras like D60 etc.) users and learnt alot from their forum discussions. Since it was a group for an entry level camera, most of the people there were new to photography and most of their questions were relevant to me. I guess most importantly when starting out, is to not hesitate to ask questions. Most people won't mind sharing tips or at least point you out in the right direction.

I eventually upgraded to a D300 and im exploring film photography with my dad's old FM2, and I recently bought an LX-3 to slip into my bag coz I wanted a camera with me all the time, but an SLR was too cumbersome. =)
