comparing 430EX and 550EX, which do you think is a more worthwhile buy? they are around the same price brand new.

I have the same query about these two flashes. . would anyone care to shed some light?

The 430EX is of course much newer with features designed to cater to the needs of the current range of dSLRs eg.It takes into account the smaller APS sensor size when zooming, sends WB info to the camera etc.

How useful these features are remains to be seen. So far opinions have been mixed... as it has always been regarding Canon speedlites.

550EX was Canon's top end flash until it was replaced by the 580EX. Which is better? A former heavy weight champ or the newer middle weight with more advanced features? Hard to say. I guess you just have to see whose features you need more.

get the sigma DG500 ST (NOT the super version). less than $300 brand new

Wondering why you would prefer the ST to the Super..

I think for best value its either the 420EX or 550EX cos the 430EX and 580EX are now currently over-priced in my opinion

Hi all, thank you all for your opinions. I just checked Alans photo and also Cathay, there are no more 420EX available. Does anyone know where to get the cheapest 430Ex. IT was said to be around 500 plus dollars. Damn X for a begininer.

Hi All!

I also looking for a flash, but not sure how 'powerful' a flash i need. I using 20D, dun do real serious photography, more of a hobbyist, but my frens will ask me to cover some events like weddings occasionally, and events held by my societies in university... mostly held in indoor areas. Had an event recently but think my built in flash was a joke, and most of the shots turned out bad...

so my question is, is 420/430 EX powerful enough to cover indoor events, and what difference is there in these two? how much more powerful is the 580ex? Thanks all!

Thanks. BTW, I am using a 10d, so will the newer features on the 430ex be fully usable on this 'older' model? I understand that the 550 and 580ex can act as master and not the 430ex. Is this correct?

The 430EX can only act as a slave, that is correct.

550 ex was going for around $500 at TCW, not sure anymore stock, got one from them recently but recyling time was not great depending on ur usage, full or partial, so got a secondhand cp-e2, at around $100, now average 1-2s recycling time. The setup cost around $600, less than a new 580EX and a bit more than 430EX. plus can be used as a master.
there should be some cp-e2 in the B&S as people go for the cp-e3.

Yes the 4XX series is powerful enough for events. The 580EX gives you faster recycle times, better range and it can be used as a master to trigger other units. Doubt you'll need something like that. If you just want a proper external flash instead of the pop-up one, the 4XX will do the job and save you a bundle.

if u just want some light..get a 380EX

able to tilt but no swivel however

Cool guys. Thanks again. You people are great.
Thanks for the advice.
Last query.
430ex or 420ex.

Read this review of the 430EX. At the bottom they list the advantages of the 430EX over the 420EX. Its very detailed. For my use, the advantages didn't justify the price difference, so I opted for the cheaper 420EX.

i dont recommend second hand flash...very unpredictable...
I had used 2nd hand flashes with consistent exposures. U're saying?

I have bought 430EX. After that I realise that I should but 580EX then. The difference is about S$200. To some people may be this is not big difference.

The advantage of 580EX is that it can become a master Wireless that 430 EX can only become a slave wireless.

If you do not mind with the wireless, then go for 430EX. It is great a lot of improvement from 420EX.

Similar question: What is the different between ST and Super ? How about the price ? Thanks and Merry X'mas.

Hi Experts out there.
I am new to DSLR.
After shooting a few in door shots during my outing with buddies, I realised that the build in flash for EOS350D is very weak.
Can anyone advise me on the flash to buy.

Million thanks guys/ ladies

If you don't mind 2nd and no need for slave, go for the older 380EX which I an still having. Identical to the 420EX/430EX except for wireless slave function.

Works beautifully with my 350D in TTL2 mode.

Hi,

I dont get what you mean.

I am also new to DSLR. Currently wanna take photos for my fren's wedding but dunno which lens to buy... 430EX or 580EX...

FYI, I will be using my kit lens. If my budget allow, i also want to get a lens but dunno which one, Wide lens better or 70-300 USM? ( I wanna take for wedding and landscape)

Becos I know 70-300 IS USM is about too high for me.

Experts here please advise.

Thanks n God bless
