What DSLR body fits the bill at $1500?

I think a 20D would be good enough. It would be slightly cheaper than a 30D, and you can use the savings on better lenses. For sports I think you will need a fast telephoto lens, and that will not be cheap.

the k10 is a good buy but i think the af will not be fast enough for your needs. if u gonna shoot sports, canon is the way to go. unless u wanna splurge and get the d300 or d3.

Or the A700. The AF on the A700 is easily a match for Canon.

None so far,i didnt see any shops around my area selling 2nd hand cams.
I think buying from users are better since they dont jack up the price so much for profit

true in a way, but you would also want the protection of an inshop warranty, which i feel, is worth paying for. You can try daniel at TCW (Camera connection) at Peninsula hotel (the alley). Nice chap, prices there are veeeeeeeeery elastic, so don't worry about the prices you see on the cameras.

Going by the price points and features, I think the D200/D300 is plenty good for most sports (real ones. not chess :bsmilie. To equal or better the semi-pro Nikons, you'd have to get a 1D series body, no 2 ways about it. At the top end, not very much of a difference, especially now that Nikon has closed the gap (some say overtaken) with the new D3 and the new superteles.

Comparing the older bodies, I would pick a used D2H over the 1D MkI. Since they should be close to the same price point out on the used market.

given the current pricing, canon can give better value if af speed is a consideration. the d300 will break the bank and the lower range nikons don't even need to try. dont forget his budget is 1.5k, not 3.5k.

That was what i thought too,as well as one other member.
However,there was another member who advised me on getting a 30D instead rather than getting a 20D + Flashgun.

cool! no knowledge abt nikon cameras but after seeing the review on dpreview, sounds like it fits the TS's requirements. if i not using canon, i would grab this!

Well, when it comes to sports, shooting in burst mode increases your chances of getting "that moment", so a higher fps definitely helps. Digital allows you to shoot as much as you want with little penalty, so might as well make full use of it!

That said, I'd say go for the 2nd hand 30D (and have a few hundred to spare, maybe for lenses or a batt grip), or up your budget a little and go for a 40D. 5fps, good noise control, slow shutter lag, etc. etc... of course this is just from the Canon camp.

P.s. dukeblue, you aren't a cyclist...from togoparts, are you?

Speaking about togoparts, I recently went for one of their events last sunday with a borrowed 400D. Maybe you saw me there. I was in a green polo tee and 3/4s.

I still stand behind my viewpoint that I make every shot count, not shoot up a storm and edit up what I have. In my opinion, that isn't smart.

It's the same to me. I'm not interested in taking the same picture again and again. I might if it was posed and I absolutely wanted it to be correct, then I'll bracket the shot. Of course, I'm not a professional, just a "weekend warrior." I do see your point of view, just that it doesn't fit into my style of photography. Maybe it's an influence of film photography where when you take a picture, that's that and you have a limited number of shots so you have to place your shots carefully.

Back to topic.

I prefer Nikon cameras for their handling and Canon for it's USM and good noise control. If you have large hands like me, aim for a 30D, not a 400D. If you think that a 30D is inferior, I saw a photographer use a 10D and his pictures beat mine.
