What does it mean by reversing the lens to do macro?

Im a noob just venturing into photography. Please enlighten me by what it means by reversing the lens to do macro. thanks !

I read about that before. I think that involves using an adapter that holds the lens such that the side of the lens that usually face inwards towards the camera will face outwards now. In doing so, the focal distance will be reduced, such that the lens becomes a "macro" lens.

It means to unmount the lens and place the front of the lens to the camera and the rear of the lens to the subject so as to get the close focusing distance functionality to do close ups that would enable you to see the features of small objects like small spiders.

However, doing this will result in the loss of auto-focus, aperture control and proper metering.

If you're a Nikon user, then you're looking at :

BR-2A (52mm thread)
BR-5 (62mm thread)
BR-3 (to protect the rear element by converting the bayonet mount into a 52mm thread so you can attach a filter)

Not sure about the other brands.
