Ya u can convert it to macro, i using the Raynox DCR-250.
A simple adaptor to attached to the lens like the lens cover.
Focusing distance is abt 10-15cm.
Here is the pic taken with 50mm 1.4D

This is a possibility, if you purchase the reversal adaptor. However, you'd loose the AF capability that way.
Otherwise, it makes a real good portrait lens by itself

AF is possible, although there will be extreme hunting and it misses nearly 99% of the time. However, just release the shutter button at almost the right spot and you'll have a good chance of locking on it with AF on the next attempt. I did this with a 300mm (tripod) + 50mm reverse handheld. Although everyone says AF is not possible, I don't see why.. :S
