What camera would you have bought if you're a beginner at photography - 40D,450D,50D?

Go with 450D for start. Learn the controls of the camera and technique of photography. Start with 40D/50D may takes time and confusion in the controls and burn pocket for a young starters.

Zexun:

I went to pennisular plaza on thursday and held both the 50D and the 450D. I pretty much liked the 50D because of its spacious gripping as the 450D was a little bit cramp for my right hand. Also, the 50D had that solid feel which i like. But i've got a question. When you hold a camera which is much heavier, will it affect your photo-taking?

I am more interested in taking landscapes, and also events(drama & sports) for my school when i join photog club next yr. can't join this yr, it's a yearly intake.

Will the heft of the camera affect how I use the camera? Definitely, and it's a positive thing. Now with my 400D decked out with a grip, and a flash on top, I feel much better. To me, the heavier the setup is (up to a point of course), the steadier I can hold the camera.

Sounds like you like how the 50D feels like-- go for that one then. I would say the 50D kit with 50mm f/1.8II lens (S$1880 + S$110, cost without accessories) is good.

Tell us your budget though, do you expect to just pay for the 50D alone (S$2k budget) or can you extend it further?

When you purchase your initial setup, after a while you will find some sort of limitation with your lens. Maybe it's not long enough, or maybe it's too slow (small aperture). Then, you'll buy something else to fit what you shoot.

For me, 2.6k was the initial entry cost. From then on, I spent no more than S$300 every 3 months, and if I didn't buy anything, I'll save the S$300 for the next pass, so I'll have S$600 to spend. First 3 months I bought batteries, a better strap, another CF card and my battery grip. Next 3 months I bought a 580EXII flash (S$300 from me, rest by dad). Then I bought strobist (off-camera flash) gear. And recently I sold off a laptop that I got for free, and bought myself an 85mm f/1.8 lens.

What I suggest is, if you're from a well-to-do family, save up each month and purchase the things that will suit what you shoot. Doing events in the hall / shooting family group photos / low-light? Save up and buy a 430EXII flash for S$430. Shooting sports? Save up and buy a 55-250IS for S$360. Shooting landscape? Err, Canon EF-S 10-22mm if you can afford it, if not stick to your kit lens ;)

All the best for your search!

Cheers,
Zexun

Zexun,

I just saved up enough for a EOS 450D kit ( only thought of buying an EOS 450D until the 50D came into the market ). But it think i can ask my dad for extra money for the 50D. He bought me a fujitsu tablet pc for my birthday so he has spent quite a bit on my birthday alr so i guess the most i'll get from him would be extra cash. But i think thinking of upgrade at a slower pace, like what you said, a 450D and spend more on my lenses. So an extra grip would actually make gripping more spacious? Roughly how much would a one of those cost?

One thing I dun like about 450D is using SD/SDHC whereas 40D/50D is using CF card...

If u getting 450D, and if u feel tat u will upgrade in the future then u will have to re-invest ur storage cards.

oh. i forgot about that . are CF cards expensive ? but actually won't they give it to you when you buy the 50D Body ?

CF card prices are dropping up and down. If you really want a 50D weight and feel on a 450D, get the battery grip. I got mine yesterday and the added weight makes it take pictures so easy and comfortable.

Yeah... get a BG as to get the weight. I am newbie as well and i found 450D will definitely do the job. Whether 40D, 50D or 450D all depend on your budget and your own preference.

Go to Vivo's Canon showroom, toy around three of them... see which you like...

Reading through everything, what I'd suggest is to go with the 450d (if you want to save up more, grab a 400d 2nd hand), with grip and a good lens. Don't grab the kit, just body alone, and with the extra cash that you'd be able to loan from your father, get the flash and/or a tamron 17-55 f/2.8.

As you progress along the route of photography, you probably find yourself limited by the lens/body/flash, but this is a very decent setup which is capable of matching most of your needs. With a heavier body and a not very decent lens, sometimes the push for you to explore further might be watered down. The reason why I suggest the lighter body is that it's small and capable, and you can take your time to explore, from fully auto to explore more manual functions.

A 50D might be an overkill, and limits your shooting chances since the on body flash is hardly capable of getting very decent event photos. What's more, there's still the issue of lens?

If budget is an issue, obviously the 450D will be better. You can get the 450D kit, and then add to it from then on. No point overstretching budgets especially during this financial crisis.

okay, i guess i know what to buy alr. thanks you guys for your help, it was great knowing more about cameras.
and all the best for yout olevels, zexun.

Would you trust salesmen rather than a shooter around your age, and the many experienced users here?

The 17-85mm lens is not good, to put it simply.

With regards to your 50D / 450D issue, here's my take if you have the money for either one (50D kit or 450D with better lens)- Go to the stores (good stores like Cathay Photo, MS Color, John3:16) and ask to have both the 450D and 50D taken out. Try out which feels better in your hand (with no regard to the price) and tell us.

Back last year, I did the same thing with the 400D and 40D and I found out that the 400D felt more comfortable cos it was lighter (i never knew the 40D was light then, was a newb), so I coupled the 400D with the L lens and went home.

You must think about what you're going to shoot though. Landscapes? Family? Portraits? 450D with a good lens (or a couple of them) will be enough. Sports? Events? Low-light? 50D will suit you better.

ah. a photographer around my age too. i'm sec 3 going 4 and i'm using film.

if ur REALLY serious

get a film slr. its really MANUAL enough for u. no auto focus no auto exposure and stuff.
really i think this is the BEST learning curve b4 u even move to a DSLR. ur now having a BBB virus in u i guess. pick a film slr and try it for at least 6 months. if u really can last long then u will in between realise wad zoom range u need, wad camera u need and all the accessories.

i now counted my "basic kit to be" budget liao. 40d most likely second hand, 24-70L, 70-200 usm L, a decent flash and tripod. i usually take street shots and night shots. maybe a nice fast prime for night too. i more like roaming photographer taking almost everything i guess. and like that i estimate 4k?

slowly boi. got a long way to go

The world on the whole has better photographers now than ever before because of Digital Photography. You can learn much faster, tune the settings and take another shot after reviewing immediately. Pardon me but film for starters is just a waste of time and money, given that digital has gotten so good and CHEAP.

For TS, I personally think that the better approach to him going into this hobby, is to buy a used 300D/350D kit for like what, $400? And play around with it. Yes, if he is serious, he will move out of that fast and if the eq then limits his learning, just sell it for like what...$200-300? The depreciation is going to be PEANUTS.

Film photography will test how 'into' photography you are, yes, no doubt about it, but for someone who just wants to get into it as a hobby, no way. Bad for your wallet, you can't chimp the LCD so you wouldn't know how the shot was until developed-- and by that time, the photograph can't be retaken if it was bad.

i'm a 'younger' photographer as well.

but anyway. i know i might sound like a complete idiot after the whole discussion about 450D and 50D. maybe you(TS) can get the 40D.

i feel that since 40D is very much similar to the 50D besides sensor and resolution. so why not spend less money on a camera body and more money on equipment? since you seem to be loaded with money. haha

I'm an accountant (hence is cheapo)... maybe you should take a look at my gear below. 'Relatively cheap' and good! lol

NB:450D is definitely worth more than the price that it is selling now, at least that's what I think :)
