What camera for Newbie

Hi Guys,
Stumble upon this site while searching the net for some camera.... So hopefully someone here can help..

I am looking for a new camera to replace my old Nikon 4500. Mainly looking for a prosumer with good quality images especially for taking Marco still life.... My budget is below $1000... Can anyone recommend me some camera to look at? Thanks....

i'm new too.. interested in learning how to take quality pictures. i know nothing about lightings and lens speed etc.

can recommend a camera that will allow me to start off yet something which still can be "upgraded" when i get better? erm.. u guys get wat i mean right? :bsmilie:

Can try the low end dslr's such as the Nikon d50 kit or the canon 350d kit cant really go wrong with either one, it depends on which you prefer, they will allow you to use when your not so good and when your skills get better. Price is around 1250 for the d50 and slightly more for the 350d i think

yea..with ur $1000 budget, just up $180 and u can buy D50 already...
and definitely u will learn a lot a lot a lot more from using a DSLR than using dcompact..

think that you can spend $700 to pick up a 2nd hand EOS 300D, invest the rest of your money in lens. Tamron 90mm f 2.8 is one good lens for macro but you need to spend about $400-500 to get a 2nd hand one. One cheap alternative is to get a reverse adaptor (<$40) and a 50mm f1.8 lens ($60-$100) ... quality also very good

actually this is probably a better suggestion than mine, try and get second hand, you can save alot of money if your unsure about how much photography your going to be doing :thumbsup:

yeah ... 700 can find 2nd hand 300d w/ kit lens .. the remaining 300 spend on flash/mid-tele zoom .. and u're good to go ..

huh ??? from Nikon 4500 to canon PS S2is ... why not go DSLR instead? Go 1 level up instead of henta-kaki ... moreover, from DSLR, you can go further in your interest rather than doing general stuff ...

I suppose it's more of which system you would remain with. Check out the differences between the 2 then decide. One thing I heard is that for Canon Zoom lenses, the zoom ring turns a different direction from Nikon. And all 3rd party lens follow Nikon's zoom direction. Some are alright with it, some can't get used to it... so it depends on yourself. Borrow & try la! Haha!

Wow!!! so much reply overnight... thanks for all the advise.... looking at second hand is a good idea... however 1 thing i was considering is that size... getting a prosumer camera will be smaller than DSLR right? The other thing is if get a body at $700 and get a Macro lens for it does it mean i can use the same lens for normal outdoor shoot? what about the filters and stuff like that? do i need to spend money on them too..??

Actually I feel if you don't wish to buy alot of accessories in the long run, its best not to get a DSLR as alot of people will know, its a bottomless pit. Once you start, you will have to buy more lens, filters etc.. Even if you buy 2nd hands, it will still chalk up to quite a big sum.. If you just want to get a good camera to take pictures without all the fuss of getting extra accessories, changing lens etc.. A prosumer cam will be a better choice and yes normally a prosumer cam will be smaller than its DSLR counterpart(except for a few heavyweights like Sony R1, FZ30).

Anyway this is just my opinion. Enjoying photography is the most important..

$1000 budget for DSLR set up is "money no enough".

The costs of the lenses would be the killer blow.

The better lenses will cost more than an entry level DSLR body.

So when deciding whether to go DSLR, must do some homework on the costs of the lenses you will need for your purpose and their picture quality. Most people can't get the picture composition they want with just the body and kit lens and many have under-estimated the costs needed to go DSLR.

Yes... you will need more and more lenses as you progress. But it's a learning curve in which you would probably derive quite a bit of satisfaction as you get good shots one after another.

But on the point of a prosumer cam is that you will be limited by the system and when you feel that you want to move on to better shots or have more effects or not be limited by the focal length or the amount of flash it can deliver, you may seriously wished that you had started with a DSLR instead.

Think about it, would you want to progress on in time, then make your choices.

Actually it is pretty true. If you can't get a DSLR due to your budget, get the best camera that you can afford that features manual settings. Then, pick up some books, read up on the basics, then go out and start shooting.

Don't be tempted too much by the BBB syndrome. Only when you are ready to move into a system, go ahead!
