hey all,
just tried snapping some random pix and i got some mystery specks of light in the photo. Not sure what they are - i didn't shoot through a window, i tried removing the filter but the specks were still there.

I cropped out the pic to show the specks below (the red arrow):

mysteryspecks.jpg

that was taken at f2.0. at f5.6 the specks MOSTLY disappeared, but i couldnt confirm cos the pic too blur.

what are those? UFOs? :p

also, what is the smudge near the green arrow? ghosting?

thanks!

try to cap your lens (ie total darkness) and take a photograph with long exposure (eg. 20s). Review the image to see if there are any 'hot-spots'

my guess for the spots:
1) hot spots on sensor
2) debris on sensor or rear element of lens

my guess for the smudges:
1) finger touched the lens, either front or rear element.

you were right about the smudge, it went away with a microfibre wipe. oops =D

but (thankfully) there's nothing wrong with the sensor - i took 5 photos capped with diff combiantion of settings (20s, 30s, f1.8, f6.0, iso 200, iso1600), they're all black.

should be something in the picture right?

I have very similar photos of the city at night and weird spots of light... would find the pics and upload them... Initially thought that it was flare on my lens, removed the filter, tried the city view and had very similar results !!!!

Check this link out --> http://www.flickr.com/photos/jay_jayv/4632651628/

Camera on tripod, shot from my bedroom with windows, open.

If it were a static light, It might not have made me think much. If you look at the streaks of lights closely, the light source seems to be spinning !!!

Have a look at the original size of the picture, the spinning light source should be obvious.

And do these lens flares change positions with the camera unmoved between shots ?

The small dots called are called ghosting and it is due to the bright lights from the HDB flats. Did you remove your UV/clear filter when shooting at night? Highly advisable.

OMG :o:o UFO!

;p

All the movements seems to be in the same direction. Look like stars to me, and with a long enough exposure, you get star trails.
