I would tend to think along the line of something carved out of a piece of material.
But if you say it is neither metallic not concrete, then we are left with only plastic (or rubber) materials.
Something molded into plastic with a mold like this giving it a hemispherical hump and a 8D... like a plastic ruler.

ok...lots of clues coming up!
the circular object is a protrusion. the circular protrusion and the words "8B" are actually the same colour as the background. the angle at which i took the photo and the lighting makes them look like they are different colours. by reducing the contrast, increasing gamma and rotating the photo 90 degrees counterclockwise, you will have a much more realistic depiction of the object.
