Wedding Photoshooters: Which EF Lens is your favorite for wedding/ROM shoots and why?

I will be going only with 1 cam and 24-105L is definitely my main lens because it gives me a good coverage of focal lengths and good IQ. 580EXII with diffuser will definitely accompany with me.

Still seriously considering if I should borrow a telephoto and sling it as a back up lens in case 105mm is not a sufficient reach.

thanks for the recommendation :)

u can do what u want since u r not the official photog (so long u dont stand in the way of the main photog). Do remember, longer range meaning u need the faster shutter speed. 200mm, u need at least 1/250s and if wedding dinner lighting not good, u need to pump up ISO.

i would take more candid/journalistic shot if i were u. so that at least u got something different from the main photog.

I'm using Tokina 11-16 on crop
and 35L, 100L for FF.

Previously using 24-70 but has change it to primes. Why? coz i simply love shooting in primes =)
35L most of the time, 100L to reach further or when macro is needed.

good reminder there :) 1/250 indoors, wedding setting without flash is like a real tough job, even with f/2.8. 4-digit ISO speed is probably needed.

BTW, do you guys use fisheye lens for some "creative" shots? I've seen some interesting one :)

creative shots.. but limited . cant be 40 out of 100 pic are fisheye creative shots. even if 20.. i consider way too much.

Yes...but as mentioned keep it to an absolute minimum (no more than 2-3 shots in your final deliverable) as too many FE shots will just take away the "wow" factor.

50L because what u see is what u get...

Hey guys..sorry to bring up an old thread..

I have been asked to help shoot my buddy's matrimony and dinner celebrations in about 2 weeks time..I wun be the main photographer(becos another fren who does it professionally have offered to do it for them as a wedding gift) so I'd prolly be covering impromptu group shots and candids during the matrimony and dinner..whilst I have confidence that I can produce some decent photos for him..i do not think I have the lens suited for this kinda of shoot..I've always been the street/landscape shooter..so what I have is a 17-50 f2.8 and 50mm f1.8 on APS-C body..i'm thinking of renting a 85mm f1.8 for the candid portrait shots..i did think of going for the 70-200 f2.8 but the f1.8 can really give a shallower DOF and subject isolation..of cos the 70-200 will have options on focal length..what do you guys suggest? 85mm or 70-200?

17-50 f/2.8 is already a great lens, gives you decent indoor shooting capabilities. IDK about renting the 85mm. 85mm on crop is 136mm for 35mm equivalent, which can be rather tight for half-body portraits (you may find yourself without the luxury of space if it is indoors, especially during the dinner). Your 17-50mm will do you better good, IMO.

Take your 17-50 f/2.8, and if you want to rent a lens, rent the 70-200 f/2.8 IS. Another great wedding photography lens, the focal length will be useful when you find yourself in a position where you can't move around much but needs the reach.

Agree much with Bro avsquare!

Think 70-200 is more versatile. The 85mm range is also covered by this lens too! Though the 85 has bigger aperture, think will be quite rare to shoot at the widest aperture and have only one eye in focus and the rest blur IMHO..

My favorite is EF 24mm f2.8 with 5D2; I wish I have 24L. Reason: I like 24mm focal length.
For group photo I will use 35L.
