Wedding Dinner (Amateur)

if you want good critique, show me one image and i will talk about one image.

but overall, there's excessive tilt, alot of pple being chopped off, an eager use of the centre focus point without recomposing (then crop afterward), colour balance is off, inconsistent/poor use, or lack, of flash.

to me, these images were captured quickly and instantaneously because of the moments. you did not have time, or aren't quick enough to think about much else. that's why i liked your go getting attitude, the technical side will come with practice.

Thanks jOhO for your comments.

Sad to say, at that point of time when I took the picture, I have not invested in a flash. I found flash a bit harsh when taking pictures under tungsten-alike lightning. I have a flash now and learning how to use it without losing the actual feel of tungsten lightning.

1.) Can I ask, does the pictures shows a lack of flash? Is it because of shadows on faces?

You are right, focus too much on the center and too much tilt and chopping of heads.

2.) Can i ask, what do you mean by colour balance is off. The pictures seem correct balance to me. Is there something that I am missing? Maybe let's take the last picture (the one with the boy) for discussion.

Not too bad to be honest...

Just remember to remind yourself to stop taking tilted shots too often. Tilts can be good, but aim to have more non-tilted shots than tilted shots else the viewer/client will certainly be irritated and dizzy.

Thanks thanks. Will take note of all these......:) Another friend's wedding coming up soon. Thought of being the "secret photographer" again. haha.

in post #4 the pple look blue.

as for the last pic, it's a great moment like most of the other images, cropped too tight for me.

Hi,

Most shots are taken at 50mm......I am still quite new in photography, why are you interested in the focal lengtH?

Hi everyone,

This is my first time taking photos on a wedding dinner. Still learning and trying to improve.

I leave out all the table to table formal shots and show only the "candid shots"

C&C are most welcome

Hi, thanks for the compliment. None of my shots are taken with flash. No int or ext flash. Maybe I am not sure how to use the flash correctly, whenever I use the flash, the pictures lack the actual mood of the environment. Esp under tungsten lightning....when I use flash, the picture will be daylight colour instead of tungsten colour. Still experimenting different ways to take better pictures with flash. :)

Can try to use CTO gels? I have not experiment it before but worth to try it out. Or alternatively can take the pictures and make changes in PS.

I see. Less the outdoor shots which I assume there are strong natural lights, I find your indoor restaurant shots came out vibrant with no distortion or blurry effect without the flash. When I shoot indoor, the pictures not so clear as yours. Perhaps u have steady hands. Whats the lens and settings you use for indoor?

I think it lies with the lens. I am using a prime lens. 50mm, 1.8 lens (One of the cheapest lens in canon family). Worth to buy it :) I think the ISO was 1000 if I remember correctly.

All my pictures are without flash. Shoot at the smallest apeature: 1.8.

Bro, u r right! This is the answer to my question...I think I need a prime 50mm F1.8 (Yes, cheapest in the 50mm family)

Or you can buy a 2.8 lens zoom lens. You will never regret buying a 2.8 lens
