Maybe I need to point out, Sydney is the odd one out! That place has lots of racists, even Ozzies(White) warned me not to go to Sydney...........i quote" Whole sh*&load of racists there! Why would you wanna go there anyway!?"

Did not know better... Just decided to take a vacation with a bunch of friends... Sydney just came to our mind... Never been back to Down Under, not going back there again...

Don't bother going to Sydney..a friend of mine was mugged in the train by a couple of Asians, they threatened to inject him with a a syringe tainted with HIV blood. After that incident he said,"once in Sydney, you will be mugged at least once in your lifetime there." Upon hearing that, I don't wanna go there at all. Haha.
Not to say Melbourne is any safer, within weeks here, while going out, friends of mine got their stuff stolen right under their noses.......but they r kinda careless as well.
Ya so UNIQUE........i wanna be a foreigner and go get scholarship for study in that country too.
Wah... Sounds like I have it easy for my trip to Sydney... Just some bad encounters with the service and hotel staffs only...
Don't intend to go back there, my next trip would be to Nepal...
Rather go Sentosa for honey moon then be treated like $hit in Aust... :bsmilie:

Because I have experience racism myself in Australia... So I can relate to what she is sharing...
Why don't you go over and stay for a few weeks? I think that would have given you a better position to call someone stupid...

I did stay there for years, kid. And been in several other countries.
I've seen my fair share of racism act and i've seen that people like you that spreading hatred with no obvious fact are the culprit of racism tragedy. It's just like blowing wind into small fire. it's just making it bigger instead of putting it off.
Sure old man... Keeping quiet would probably cause racism to die away...

after reading a lot of this, i have to say something too.
i LIVE in melbourne. actually, i was born in melbourne and have lived/studied in melbourne all my life. i've been to singapore and malaysia about every two years since i was one month old as my parents and relatives are malaysian and singaporean.
i have to say that the level of customer service that i get from ALL races in melbourne is 100% better than what i receive in singapore or malaysia. customer service doesn't seem to exist here (i'm in singapore right now). asking for directions is difficult and getting help with the normal tourist things can be a challenge in itself. whenever i need help with anything in melbourne, i can quite easily go into any store or ask anyone on the street and they will help me with no issues. most of my family from overseas have said the same.
but in singapores defence, i have to say that i had EXCELLENT customer service from the UOB bank the last time i was here. i couldn't access my australian bank account and they managed to make calls to various places to sort it out for me with no fees or anything asked from me. apart from that, i think that the levels of friendliness i get in australia are second to none.
i've also been all aroudn australia to every capital city and have never had racist remarks made against me. my family and i have always experienced friendly faces from all races here.

Racism exisits everywhere. This is not a call to boycott Australia but to acknowledge it instead of sucking up to western values and saying that it does not exist or that it is the fault of Asians that they deserve to be treated with contempt.
To Acuard, the reason why people walk away which incidentally I have encountered many times is because they mistake you for a sales man or credit card sales staff posing as surveyors. Hence most people wont stop to even listen to what you are want to say and walk away in a hurry because they dont want to be stuck in sales pitch. I have been ignored when asking for directions, ignored when trying to tell the passerby that he or she is walking straight into shot when I am filming. And the responses are the same.... look of contempt and "NO NO NO DONT WANT TO BUY!!!" The funniest was when one of them was saying that while her head was turned to my direction and almost slammed into the camera team with the camera in front of her. Hence it is a matter of culture.
I really feel sad that we always defend westerners... where is our bloody pride as Asians? We have become peusdo westerners, not wanting to learn our mother tongue, wanting to rub shoulders with westerners so that we look good and higher class. Seeing westerners get 1st class service in work, clubs, restaurants and some even say among the ladies.
It is okay if we treat each other equally but when we look down on our own race... well it is racism too.. to our own kind.

Yep, reverse racism... actually, I've seen it quite prevalent in Singapore and among the minority groups in western society - quite a strange phenomenon.
i've been thru immigration both in sydney and perth, they do generally look out for asians. We can call it racism, racial profiling, etc etc... these guys are just doing their jobs, the way we dress and interact with them also influence their treatment towards us...
i know it doesnt feel like on top of the world when one is being searched, but mabe we can go somewhere else if we dont want to be searched that way...thailand's preety fun and its beaches would rival that of australia

Agreed here....
No matter where you are in the world - there will be people who are racist and there will be people who aren't. There is a whole spectrum of different views and beliefs, so taking a random sample and applying what you observe in that one sample to the whole population is downright naive.
I've personally lived in Australia for over 20 years and have been fortunate enough not to experience any such racism that I remember (apart from some name calling back in school) - but maybe I'm not sensitive enough to it - I have heard about incidents from others.
To the posters who say that their bad experience in a certain country means they won't go back there again - well, it's up to you, and I have no business telling you otherwise, but if you take a step back and think about it, it's all a part of life, you'll get good and bad experiences no matter where you are. If you apply the behavior of a small sub section of a society onto to the whole society, then you are as guilty of the same crime as the small sub section.
