Warning: Immigration screening at Melbourne, Australia.

Hi everyone,

I find it really timely to read this thread as my hubby and I just returned from Melbourne yesterday. The travel agent told us our visa is valid for 1 year (multiple-entry) but we were only there for 5 nights. We were fortunate not to encounter any racism at the immigrations though we were queueing at the 'THINGS to DECLARE' lane cos when it's our turn, we went to a officer of Asian or Aborigini origin. He just took a look at our food items and let us go. It was 3am.

However, on our last day in Melbourne, we encountered a racist treatment which almost spoiled our holidays. I had purchased A$600 worth of merchandise from different outlets of a particular brand over our stay there and wanted to claim GST tax refund at the airport. The tax brochure clearly states that we can accumulate multiple receipts but we have to get the retailer to CONSOLIDATE all the receipts into 1 SINGLE invoice before we can claim tax refunds. When we went to the outlet nearest to our hotel in downtown Melbourne Central Shopping Centre, the lady manning the store was wearing the nametag of MANAGER. I thought, 'Good' she must know what to do. How hell wrong I was.

The moment we voiced our request for her to CONSOLIDATE the receipts - she said in a rude and condesending tone, 'NO, we don't do that.' We tried to show her that this is what the tax refund brochure states, she was not interested and repeated several times again annoyingly, 'NO, we don't do that. Tax refund is done at the airport'. I kept my cool and tried to explain to her that yes, we are aware that tax refund is only done at the airport but the brochures says to CONSOLIDATE all the receipts before the officers at the airport can process our refunds! She was not interested in what we were saying and just waved us off. We politely asked if she can check with her head office, she shook her head continuously, shrug her shoulders and kept repeating, 'WE DON'T DO IT!'. By now, some of the other customers in the shop was staring at us like some Chinese idiots trying to create trouble. She, being a MANAGER, was utterly RUDE even though she saw my receipts totalled S$600 of purchases from their brand! This is nothing but plain racism. We felt embarrassed by her treatment.

We walked out, went to our next shop (Country Road) and was served by a young pleasant Vietnamese salesgirl. When we told her that we wanted to claim tax refunds, she knew immediately what to do. She took our receipts, wrote down the purchase amounts into 1 single tax invoice, totalled the amount, got us to sign, and Viola! It's done in less than 5 minutes! We told her our encounter at the previous shop and she was puzzled as she said Melbourne Central is popular with tourists so they get such requests ALL THE TIME. So we took the sample invoice from Country Road and went back to the shop to show the racist manager. Instead of helping us, she that she DOES NOT have the invoice book and she can't do it for us. Throughout the whole conversation, she was very unfriendly and made us feel so unwelcome. We did not believe her and went back to Country Road to borrow their phone to contact the head office and explained our situation to 3 different persons.

Finally, to cut the long story short, after much ding-donging, the supervisor in the head office called the Manager of the store up and told her to follow what Country Road did and issue us a hand-written invoice. She insists that she received several of such requests everyday but she just told them 'WE DON'T DO IT'. After she put down the phone, she did not issue us the invoice immediately, she called 2 other colleagues in the head office to complain in full-view of us!! How rude. Surely she knew we could hear what she was complaining??! She was obviously damn 'buey-song' that she had to accede to our request. Then, she opened a little cupboard behind the cashier and know what? It was FULL of invoice books!!! She had lied to us!! We were very dismayed at her horrible atittude towards us - just because we are Asians.

It is a pity that our stay in Melbourne had to be tainted with such a racist salesperson but through our persistence, we got back A$90 in tax refunds. Still worth it but kinda leave a bad taste in your mouth. So much for my racist encounter in Australia. Sorry I wrote so much cos when you are victims of racism, you just want to vent and caution others. :embrass:

While I empathise with your experience, I agree with pl4nx, this isn't so much rasicm as it is lazyness on the part of the Lady Manager. I've worked with people like that before and they are a royal PITA and should not be working in the service industry.

BTW, Country Road sells overpriced clothes manufactured in China (what isn't these days) - you are just paying for the brand name. Your money would have been better spent in an RM Williams store (better quality).

well lady...don't you think it's too fast to consider this thing as racism issue?
how do you really 100% know that racism was the real reason?
it sounds more like procedural problem to me which could be happening in any shop.
let's say this thing happened in singapore, are we going to consider this as racism?

i agree with laserlordz post, it's very well said. when we point our fore finger to someone, the rest of the fingers are pointing back to us.
well..i guess we just need to keep it cool and reflect to ourself, do we do the same thing?
just my 2 cents lady.

You're right, it smells like a subsconsicous, natural urge to use race as an excuse for getting bad service. Bad service and lousy store managers are race-blind in nature.Tell me why I get better service from Australians/Malaysians rather than Singaporeans?

Nuff said.

well pl4nx,

I hope you dun misunderstand me. I certainly dun mean to say ALL Australians are racist. Infact, my husband's god-parents are Australians and one of the reason for our trip there was to catch up with them. Just that this shop manager's attitude stinks and she was terribly CONDESCENDING. It's in the tone of her voice and her expressions that makes us feel the racist slant. It's difficult to describe the situation to you guys who wasn't around to witness it. If you ask me, yes Singapore salespersons can be 'racist' too - they often treat caucasians better. Guess it's the legacy of colonialism.

sorry mate dont see this as racist, more as rude and stupid.

I was on a business trip to Sydney last year with my Ang Mo coll and me, being Asian, fitted their 'so-called' profile and was subjected to 2 rounds of luggage search.
The officer appreared unshaven with long, unkempt hair though in uniform.

Thin line bet racial discrimination and counter-terrorism, if you asked me.

Well seems to me it's more like a case of laziness on her part....or that she just doesn't have a clue of what's going on.

Having been here for 7 years, I know how this will come off initially; I've copped my fair share of racist remarks working in an environment full of drunk white people(I work in hospitality :sticktong ). But I guess I've come to realise that some people are just pricks, no matter what color they are.

I can guess why us Asians are always being checked. Blame it on those who want to smuggle in food products despite warning after warning not to.

If some black sheep cannot understand the rules, that's why the rest gets the tough treatment. Is it so hard to leave the damned bak kua, kiam sng tee and what not at home? :dunno:

ang-moh for westerners in singapore , nigro for afro-americans in america, orang cina for chinese in indonesia... all are rasist expressions however you turn it...

Off topic abit

for your info... Orang Cina is not a racist remark, it just mean (Orang=person) , (Cina=chinese) so...Chinese person...

yes, agree... stupid. Both of the seller and buyer.
The buyer stupid too, because anyhow make statement about racism without knowing what it means

The seller could really be racist thru her body language like sneering, snide remarks, eyes, facial expression AND especially gestures...

We are not there, I choose to give her the benefit of doubt as I have encounter racism in Australia and I know what she is talking about...

Sometimes I find it strange.... when we get our heads stepped on, we blame ourselves. Say that because we bring meat stuff across borders. When we get looked down by others, we say it is because we deserved to be look down... When our fellow country men suffer at the hands of others, we defend those who abuse her.

No wonder some say we still think we are a colony of sorts...... and we still cannot shake off the colonial mindset that we must bow to certian "superior" races.

amateur_photographer, I think it is very impolite of you to use the term 'stupid' when I was just sharing my personal experiences. It's ok for you to disagree with my post but it is certainly NOT ACCEPTABLE to label people as 'stupid'. Like what Wowee and Centuryegg say, they can be racist in their BODY LANGUAGE and GESTURES. Moreover, you were not there to face the discrimination first-hand so why demean others' experience as 'STUPID'. That's totally uncalled for! You also mentioned that I 'make statement about racism without knowing what it means', for your information, I am a teacher and I teach my students the theme of racism, discrimination and prejudice through literary studies of Anne Frank, To Kill a Mocking Bird and Schindler's List. Surely, I will know racism when I encounter one?

I feel disappointed by fellow CSers can make such remarks. Makes me shudder about posting again although I have been a fervent supporter of this forum. :thumbsd:

Hi pixie_genie!

Don't stop posting because some people are not sensitive enough in a forum... Please do not deprive the rest of us from your input...

Happy posting!

Yeah... Like calling "china man" in some western countries, extremely rude and offensive...

Just my 2 cts comments, I've been here in Melbourne for the past 6 months, and so far I've not encountered any racism or any sort of discrimination. Perhaps the only discrimination is that international students can't get concessions for public transport! However, I do come across sales people who are plain lazy and rude. I guess it's not so much of racism, it's more of the former. Generally people here are pretty ok, or like what my ozzie frens said, they pretned to be nice..everyone pretend hence everyone will be happy in the end. :bsmilie:

That is because the Australian government takes care of its citizens, foreigners pay more for education and other stuff. Not like some countries, foreigners get full scholarship and locals pay full fees.

I was in Sydney for a few weeks 2 years back... My friends and I (1 french, 1 indian and including me 3 singaporean chinese) went to queue to order food from Mcdonalds... My french friend was served 1st and he recieved courteous service from the counter guy. When my Indian friend was served next... The service was terrible... We chinese have it badly too... He did not even realised we are friends until my french friend walked back and ask what is happening.

Encounter a few of such incidents during my stay...

Poor service or racism? Or my imagination?

good. you got my bait exactly.

By saying her stupid, the worst can happen to me or her is just personal thing, between me and her (e.g. she kill me).

But by saying racist, the amount of hatred is multipled endlessly and can trigger war or genocide. So please be careful with the word and do not easily claim this and that as racism act.
