wants to get a dslr

Hi people!

I understand some of you have some doubts or should I say worries about me getting a dslr.
But don't worry, I'm just gonna begin with a amateur dslr before upgrading to slightly more advance ones when I've gained more knowledge about dslr's.
At the mean time, I just need help about how do I go around looking for the best prices for the best cameras which is within my budget.

My budget is $700 or below.

I've seen some recommendations: Sony A230, Panasonic Fz10 or Fz20 and the Pentax K-x.

Any of those mentioned are relatively user friendly?
If not, I will read up on the instruction menu available.

Well, I do appreciate those who replied within 2 days of my posting of this thread.

I'm still opened to options and suggestions!

I wanna thank you guys for commenting.

But I already have a compact cam.
I've tried setting it to it's fastest and maximum quality it can produce.
Everytime I fidget a little just a second after pushing the button, the quality of the photo would turn out to be blur.
The other thing is that it couldn't really take close up shots, if it is too close to the object, it would turn out blur as well.

I've tried a friend's dslr before, it's a pretty fun thing to have.
It snaps in a quickie and still captures enough light and the quality is amazing.
Fidget a little but still the picture comes out clear.
That's pretty amazing!

My dad owns a dslr long time ago. I believe he will be able to use and look after it when he gets one. Definitely wouldn't mind slinging it around his shoulders or neck.

I really want to thank you guys for commenting but I still insist on getting a dslr.
I may be stubborn but your great help and kindness would be utmost appreciated.

If you fidget when using a DSLR, you will also get blurry images, unless you get a fast lens or a lens with IS or VR. A DSLR coupled with one of these lenses will almost definitely exceed your $700 budget.

Unless your dad or mom was previously a professional photographer, dont buy them a DSLR... i suggest buy them a $649 Sony DSC-HX5V and all the way use Intelligent Auto mode for their Egypt trip.

I recently gotten myself a HX5V from Harvey Norman at Funan, paid $649 (i know some guys here will scream "Expensive!") and comes with load of freebies... Standard set comes with 1 battery and 1 8GB MSPD (Mark 2), i got 1 extra original battery, 1 8GB SDHC (Class 4), screen protector, mini tripod, card reader and pouch.

Haha people, he wants a DSLR, let it be.

The best bet for your budget now should be the Sony A290 ($699). You can go for the A390, where you can see the picture thru the screen, but its more expensive.

I'm currently using an a230 now. if you want to try just PM me. can try see if you like it, you can buy from some shop, selling cheap now.

I'm confused... you're getting for yourself or your parents?

If for yourself, with your budget, I think there is only a few DSLR to choose from, can't be that difficult.

How about the Olympus EPL1, small and light.

And can use iAuto all the way.

Or the Sony Nex 3 or 5.

Personally, i think sony NEX will be a good idea for you. It works like a DSLR where you can change the lenses, has a viewfinder so you need not look into the boxy thing. It is the intermediate in btw a DSLR and a compact. Do go try it out yourself. Quality is compromised a wee little bit but its still an extremeely good camera. Especially for travel since it is so small and compact. Furthermore, you can change lens which allows you to choose a lens which suits your needs best. DO consider!! =)

Have you considered mirrorless camera?
Last time I checked with Cathay Photo (Marina Square),
they sell Samsung NX10 (small & lightweight mirrorless camera) with 18-55mm zoom kit for S$790, and S$870 for the camera and 30mm f2 (faster lens).
of course you can adjust the shutter speed and aperture.

A bit confused, are you taking over the camera after your parents' trip? Cause some posts seem to suggest thats the camera is for them, and some posts seem to suggest that its for you.

If the camera is for them, and since you mentioned that your parents have used cameras before, did they have any input on what they would like to use?
